I didn't think I'd be so gripped by this book but the author captures the pains and troubles of everyday high school life with such honesty and emotion that I couldn't help recognize half the characters from my own high school days. There's Rachel, the ex best friend who's had a personality transplant over the summer... Heather, the temporary friend who's only waiting to be snapped up my a cooler clique... and, of course, the protagonist who doesn't quite fit in anywhere.The beauty of this novel is that it could have survived alone without the much more sinister story behind it. But, that said, it also served as a very sad and moving voice for rape victims, particularly the vast amounts who feel at fault or scared or embarrassed by what happened. It was a quick, easy teen read but it's also the kind that plays on your mind repeatedly after finishing it.I hope my review has been helpful to you. This book has content warnings for bullying, rape and assault.This book is tricky for me to review because I understand the importance of it and agree with its importance, and yet I have really complicated feelings about the execution. It’s not really designed to be an enjoyable read, so it’s tricky to measure why things are working for me and why things aren’t. Here’s my attempt at getting my thoughts down.Every single person in this book is insufferable to some level. Every single time one of them shows up you know they’re not going to do anything helpful, and I just wanted them all to go away and leave Melinda alone. While there was so much talk about getting her to speak there was none about why she wasn’t speaking. Assumptions were made, threats would occur, but no one thought to ask why. While this works to show the ignorance people have around the subject of sexual assault — as annoying as it was, it was unfortunately realistic — it really made the book drag, and that’s really hard when the book is already less than 200 pages long to begin with.Additionally, not a lot happened in the book. There wasn’t much of an actual plot; it was describing Melinda’s year at school without providing much of a through storyline outside of the rape, and that didn’t really work to hold all of the book together because it was more of a covert storyline. I went along with Melinda’s day-to-day business, and eventually I didn’t care anymore because nothing was happening and there was no emotion whatsoever. While it didn’t make for fun reading, I do think that this was actually pretty clever; I didn’t care because Melinda didn’t care. By giving me a lack of emotions, Anderson was making me feel like Melinda was really feeling. It’s a subtle touch, but once I realized that was happening I felt a little better about my reaction to the book.This isn’t really supposed to be a book that you’re supposed to enjoy. It exists to make you think about sexual assault and rape culture and how those who aren’t directly participating in sexual assault are still a part of the problem. This book isn’t my favorite by any means, but I do appreciate it and what it has done.Final rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was assigned to mandatory reading for my 14 year old at school. I read the book first as I always monitor my kids stuff and found it inappropriate for her age group. But that is just my opinion you have to read to form your own for what fits your child. There is no life lesson to be taught in this book that I can see. Does give a negative out look on some parts of life in high school. If the book ended differently I would consider having her read it at this age but it didn’t. Again you have to form your own opinions. There is drinking rape bullying and some curse words but nothing major on the words part. A lot say there is drugs in this book, just shows they did not read it there is NO DRUGS IN THE BOOK! Hope this some what helps.

I first read this book back when I was actually Melinda's age -- fourteen. Now, considering the nature of this story (rape), some might think that's a wee bit inappropriate. But I don't. Now did I really grasp what was going on in the book? Probably not. I was a pretty dense tween, but I did feel for Melinda even back then. I was a really shy kid and rarely spoke up in class (though, not for Mellie's reasons at all) so I really connect with her.You don't find out exactly what happens until over halfway into the book, but you can tell something went really wrong somewhere along the way. Why'd she call the cops to a party? Why do all her friends hate her? Why won't she say?To have something so horrific happen at such a crucial part in your life.... Think about it. You're thirteen, you're at a party, IT attacks you. You're hurt, drunk, confused, and so young -- how would you react? Honestly, I don't even want to think about it.And that's why I'm grateful for Speak. It makes you. It shows you what goes on in someone's head when IT happens.This is something I hear about the book a lot: Melinda not talking is frustrating. I suppose whether or not you enjoy the book depends on if you are frustrated for the right reasons or the wrong ones. It frustrated me because I cared about her. Because her silence was hurting her so much -- both emotionally and physically. Her lips ... that part of the book has always stuck with me. Her cracked, bloody, slightly gross lips. They're a wonderful way to represent how her silence is hurting her.If you don't understand why she can't speak up -- how hard that is for someone who has been through what she has -- or care about Melinda, then the silence will probably kill you. I guess I shouldn't call this the wrong reason. It's an opinion and all have a right to their opinions. But it's hard for me to understand how someone can think like this. Really. She was thirteen. It was that crazy summer between junior high and high school.That exciting, huge point if life when you think you're done being a kid. When you're going to go to a new school -- weren't you nervous/excited/sososcared/sosohopeful/sosoeverything about that? Will you make new friends? Will you be friends with your old ones? Will you be popular? A loser? A social leaper? Will you get a boyfriend? Will you get your heart broken? Wtf will happen!?Add to that what Melinda had to go through -- with being blamed and hated and pushed down at your lowest point.My favorite part of this edition is the poem Laurie added. It was assembled from emails she got from people who read the book. It's so powerful -- to hear how much victims teens really relate to Melinda and her journey. Teens that have gone through the same thing or so much worse. Even adults.There is so much meaning behind everything in this book. It's so brilliant that way. When you start to read it, you can tell the style is different than the norm and it'll be a literary book. But it's not one of those unreadable literary books. A normal person could easily enjoy it. This book is very entertaining.Since Mellie doesn't talk, the entire book is pretty internal. What nightmares are going on in her head, what she's feeling, what she refuses to think/feel about.Melinda's character arch is completed. Everything is so satisfying in the end. Laurie's endings are very similar to Courtney Summer's. When the book is done, it's done. It's such a powerful ending.The final line is beyond perfect.Another perk of the special editionLaurie talks about writing a sequel to Speak. Maybe she could call it Spoke. She says she's open to the option, she's just waiting for Melinda to speak to her again. You get glimpses at Melinda in her other books, but ... even though a lot of things are left up in the air I like the way it ended. I don't want to mess with it. Melinda lives happily ever after in my head. Very happy.

This was a hilarious and informative read. It's got recipes, history, language lessons and a good dose of jokes on every page. I'd recommend reading it if you're Italian or live in an area with a lot of Italian folks, as it will help you to understand their jokes, culinary habits and culture. Writing humor can be really difficult, but the author did an excellent job of it. I had a great time reading the book and laughing along with his explanations of funerals, sayings, stereotypes, the Mafia, and everything in between. Obviously, it's not a book for anyone you wouldn't show an R-rated movie to!

Italy is the darling of many a history buff and this book will surely be enjoyable for anyone who enjoys facts about the Roman Empire. However this book covers a plethora of subjects from Italian food to pop culture to discussions of the...completely nonexistent mafia. The book is a fun engaging read, it's difficult to write something that's both educational and enjoyable and this book adds some excellent levity between facts. I'd suggest this for anyone who is interested in Italy, or Italian American culture. Sometimes it's nice to broaden ones horizons and I bet if you're Italian this book can give you a newfound appreciation for your wonderful culture.

DiGerolamo's book gives an overview of Italian culture and history with a bit of flare. From the story of Romulus and Remus to famous Italians, this quick read gives short snapshots of some of the most prominent aspects of Italian-ness. Throughout the book, they also offer helpful translations for words like “vespa” and recipes for simple italian foods including meatballs and pasta. Simultaneously flippant and educational, this book is a useful tool for anybody either planning on traveling to Italy or interested in Italian culture. Kudos to Tony Digerolamo for a job well done.

Honestly, as an Italian American, I found this to be a pretty decent overview of being Italian. It’s funny, and I like that DiGerolamo includes translations for the Italian words he uses. This book is essentially Spark Notes for Italy, with a bit more humor. It’s got your Italian history, food history and recipes, history of Italian immigration to the US, family, culture, famous Italians, mob history… it’s a comprehensive guide and interesting to boot. I’m especially fond of the section on explain Italians to non-Italians - it sounds just like my family. If you're looking for an overview of Italian history, food, and culture, then this book would be right for you.

This book is pretty funny, and I have to say very enlightening in a more interesting way. I’m Italian-American, lived in Italy for a brief moment, and then visited there 2 more times later in life and there is plenty in there I did not know or have ever heard of! Even with all those guidebooks and tours… There aren’t a lot of curse words all over the place either, so if you have a teenager that needs to learn more about their heritage this is a much more palatable way than giving them a history book. I would recommend this 10000% to read before going on a trip to Italy. I like to have the back history of the place I’m visiting but usually, those books are so incredibly dull. There is the bit on dating that I disagree with- the author says that the Italian woman says she doesn’t want drama and to play games but in reality wants both of those things. Um, it’s not 1982 guy. Take that crap out.

For the past year, she’s let one man consume and control her life but when she’s finally had enough, she takes off in hopes of a peace that’s been missing for far too long.Something pulls her to stop in a picturesque town on an island off the Maine coast where she finds mysteries and art and the love of one townswoman steeped so deep into the town's core, she can’t help but want to discover more as she’s trying desperately to also discover herself once again. Add on top of that a viking like man who fascinates her and she soon finds herself as much an intricate part of the island as the locals.This book had an entire cast of magnetic and formidable characters. Every one of them stood out for one reason or another and I enjoyed getting to know them and guess at the secrets they were hiding. The death of a beloved local sends this sweet romance into an incredibly well played mystery that kept me guessing most of the way through the book.Miranda was a determined heroine who was strong and capable and her viking of a man, Owen, was shy and sweet, but he was suffering speculation, guilt, regret and sorrow as an entire town blamed him for the murder of their beloved.And then there’s Suze. Through the author's telling of Suze, she became lifelike, taking on a vibrant personality so real, it was as if she was still physically there, hovering between the pages. I guess in a way she was. The town lived and breathed Suze and she was woven into every part of their lives. The author brought that out and she felt as real as Owen, Miranda and the rest of the living cast in this book.I enjoyed the enchanting way the author laid out the symbolism, the red herrings, the mystery and especially the odd occurrences, which gave this book a supernal feel.Downside...There really wasn’t a lot to complain about with this read. I enjoyed most everything about it. But I did think the ending was rushed and too conveniently laid out. The author had a chance to put some real emotional angsts and some real drama in there with a hint of danger as the ending played out but instead it was a bit syrupy and too well put together. Other than that, it was a solid read.The Wrap Up:This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the writing style and the story enough that I’ll definitely be checking out her other works.

I picked up this series on a whim and I’m not disappointed. While the story seems to have similarities to Overlord, the main characters are different in their approaches.Diablo has always been a solo player but now finds himself part of a group of cute girls who all need his Over Powered abilities.The internal monologue is always amusing but he seems to be a great Role Player as he knows just what to say as a Demon Lord from Another World.The girls are okay but a little too dependent on the male protagonist.

Great addition to the series. I would say better than than the first two, the stakes actually start getting real, and there are some darker moments which I liked. As always, the fan service is over the top sometimes, but it's used sparingly, thankfully.

It just gets better and better as you read more volumes. I enjoyed this volume especially since it means the next one is gonna come out which is my favorite. There's more battles in this one than previous volumes which is super rad.

As a fan of How not to summon a Demon Lord since watching the Anime series. Defiantly the light novels add so much more making a very enjoyable experience.

I have purchased all the books prior to this one and each get better. Read both 4 and 5 in one afternoon and now hoping that 6 comes out real soon for now I will just reread all 5 again.

If you like anime, manga or light novels in general, this one is worth the read. Not as overtly ecchi as the anime version, but still with it's funpoints

The book is overly technical. It explains a lot of the reasons why the Mediterranean diet works, which is fine. It then fails to deliver on the main reason someone might be buying this book: It never explains how to turn this information into a workable eating plan. In fact, in several places it says it would be impossible to get all the nutrients you need from modern foods and suggests purchasing supplements. Having been to Dr. Sears website, I have no doubt the supplements will be able to purchased there.As someone who has been a long time adherent to the Zone Diet and can credit it with being the reason behind my relative good health, this book was an extreme disappointment. I had been reading the science behind the Mediterranean diet and attempting to meld it with my zone methods myself. I was hoping this book would provide clear, concrete directions on how to accomplish this. Perhaps updated food block lists? Recommendations on a number of blocks to be devoted to certain vegetables? The book did none of that. In fact, if I was not already familiar with the Zone diet, I wouldn't know even where to start. My takeaway would be to 'eat vegetables' and 'avoid breads & processed foods.' This is good advice, certainly, but hard for some people to implement without greater structure. In fact, it's this very structure that drives people to implement the Zone diet over more holistic diets in the first place.To summarize: If you'd like to understand some of the science behind why the Mediterranean diet works, this plan may interest you. If you're looking to implement or adjust an eating plan, this book does not provide the needed tools to do so.

This book is good. It also includes recipes which I really loved. It takes time to get used to a healthy diet but if you persevere you reach to a point that you crave healthy food. With this diet you lose weight but slowly, for me at least because I am 61 years old, but I prefer to lose slowly and steadily as the most important thing is your health and this is definitely a healthy diet.

Awesome recipes, new information on polyphenols and the faulty association of gluten itself as the harmful component to most people (he blames the overprocessed carbs and high glycemic indices rather than gluten. This is consistent with my observations. I've been wheat free for 15 years but not necessarily gluten free. Some of those gluten free baked goods are more addictive than the traditional kinds, since they're made from ultra-refined rice flour and powdered sugar. BLAST of glucose.He also recognizes his earlier books advocated for too much fruit, especially for women, who tend to me more sensitive to fructose. Another great thing is his recipes contain the full caloric/nutritional information rather than merely "blocks" or protein, carb, and fat. I'm very happy with this book! Recipes are modern, unique, and fairly simple to make.... I love Dr. Sears! Here's to 19 years of zone-compatible living! :)

I have followed Dr. Sears recommendations since the 1990's. At that time very view medical doctors offered nutritional information, since they were not taught about the subject in their medical training. His first book, "ENTER THE ZONE", was like a cold drink of water in a desert. I am an eighty-seven year old statistic of one and my primary doctor considers my health well above average. The cost of Dr. Sear's books are much less than a monthly life insurance payment or a trip to the doctor's office.

Dr Sears has an important story. Chronic inflammation inside our cells from junk food is the cause of most of our disorders of aging including cancer, heart problems, auto-immune, diabetes, etc. Omega-3's & a lot of polyphenols from vegetables are the answer. He's updated his prior works & put the technical details in appendices. Fish oil, polyphenols & the zone life style are the anti-inflammatory measures of choice. There are also algae based, vegetarian omega-3's available as well. One issue he overlooks is IGF-1 from excess animal protein, but it is NOT a high protein diet. He is clear that it is a moderate protein life style, which can come from vegetables. The IGF-1 effect on growing cancer cells is still being researched, so omitting it as a topic is not a serious flaw.As is the trend in health books, he includes recipes. He allows real, extra-virgin olive oil, but that will be hard to find in American markets. It's too bad the health book writers aren't on the same page, but on one point they agree - we need a lot more vegetables in our diet and a lot less vegetable oil from processed junk food (corn oil, soy oil). You'll also learn about a super-food - maqui berry with an off-the-charts ORAC value and the "master switch of life", AMP Kinase. You can adhere to the current popular diets - paleo, various types of vegetarian - and still be in the zone to reduce inflammation. Other prominent health book writers on-board the anti-inflammation band wagon are Dr Hyman, MD, Dr Andrew Weil, MD & Dr Perlmutter, MD.Update - As of 1-18, PhDs & MDs on YouTube are reporting inflammation may be the underlying cause of cancer, heart disease, auto-immune and the neurological illness of seniors. MDs doing YouTube videos on the EPA & DHA effect on inflammation include Dr Greger & Dr Fuhrman. Not bad if one intervention ie. change of diet, can solve most of your aging related problems.

The first 10 pages or so that I have read seem to be exactly what I was hoping for. I will compare the text to the Nag Hammadi test that I have for accuracy between the two. So far so good.

My favorite for almost 30 years. Nothing like this book for the serious researcher of Gnosis.

The book completes you spiritually and strengthens your light and light power, it breaks the walls around your soul. And completes you in all Fullness and Gnosis. The book has been banned by some churches because they needed a uniform set of beliefs to have more control of the knowledge. That way you throw money at them, and they, the Catholics and others can say you have to go through a pope or a priest to talk to god so they can give you tainted fruit, and you also come out tainted and you keep spreading the tainted knowledge. They are hoping to trap souls in the chaos, by teaching false doctrines. The book is about Jesus discoursing 11 times with disciples after resurrection and going to light kingdom and receiving light vesture.

Clearly the edition Pistis Sophia I ordered was scanned with character recognition software and never proofread. As a result, it was impossible for me to read as on nearly every page whole clumps of words were gibberish. (I am an English teacher and have skill and patience at deciphering gibberish, but I am not a cryptologist so this e book edition defeated me .) I understand that the content is worth reading and will look for a print copy.

It is difficult to rate this ancient text with a modern reader in mind. I've developed a layman's interest in early Chritianity and especially in the "lost Christianities," by which is meant the beliefs and speculations that would ultimately be deemed heretical once Christianity became dominated by a single structure of authority. The lost Christianities produced their own various texts, and while many were intentionally destroyed by Rome, a few were hidden to be discovered centuries later. Some are very readable in modern translations and offer provocative alternatives to the Christiantiy we all know, but Pistis Sophia is not of that sort. This text throws the reader into a strange cosmos filled with a hierarchy of supernatural beings, a hierarchy of wisdoms and revelations, etc., npresenting such things as though the reader is already quite familiar with them. It is disorienting to say the least, and to me incomprehensible. To the scholar, it is an important historical document, but to others it makes The Wizard of Oz read like a description of one's own backyard. Not for everyone!

A must have book for any seeker of light in the path of Gnosis.

This book is not easy to understand, but if you give it a chance, it is fascinating. I think there is a very good chance this is the final teaching of Jesus meant only for his apostles. It goes into a detailed illustration of the afterlife by dividing souls into three categories -- souls who have not sinned, and are thereby allowed passage into heaven, souls who have sinned but have received the Mysteries (understand the difference between good and evil and show an abundance of remorse), souls who have sinned but who have not received the Mysteries (don't know the difference between good and evil and therefore have no remorse for their actions or compassion for their victims). Souls who have sinned but have received the Mysteries receive a light punishment in the form of an apology tour, and are then cast back into the Midst (the world) to occupy a new life in a new body. Souls who have sinned, have not received the Mysteries (show no compassion or remorse) are punished harshly in "hell" and then cast back into the world and a new life. Souls who have been granted passage into Heaven and then sin in Heaven (in the form of a predatory crime directed against a vulnerable and unsuspecting population of innocent souls is my guess) are treated very harshly. There is a lot more to it. It gives one much to think about. The fact it was written at the same time as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and refers repeatedly to an 'expanding universe' and a universe populated by spheres, is very interesting. Also, this is the book that indicates Mary Magdalene was Jesus's star pupil. She seems to be the only one in the room who understands the material.
