This is not about data and specific advice regarding the risks that you as an individual face in everyday life (for which see How Risky Is It, Really?: Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts or The Norm Chronicles: Stories and Numbers About Danger). Instead it is a masterful overview of how many disciplines inside academia, and professions outside academia, think about Risk nowadays. Of books I have read (on any subject), it is one of the most successful at combining abstract high-level concepts with a set of substantial real-world examples. In style it is somewhat like a well-written concise textbook rather than a "popular science" book, so it requires some concentration rather than being easy bedtime reading. In the examples it presents data but does not seek to engage any details of statistical analysis.Regarding content, I cannot do better than compress the author's own summary: thinking about risk in the context of decisions where risk matters; creating measures of risk; understanding probabilities of risks by combining historical records, science and expert judgement; how individuals move from understanding risks to making choices; risk perception and judgmental biases; risk communication; cultural aspects of risk.Rather than plugging one author's view, the book emphasizes the many different aspects of risk and the complexity of real-world decision making. It strikes me as ideal for the reader who already has some familiarity with some aspect of the study of risk, but who is puzzled why other people view risk differently. Because many ideas are touched upon in a single paragraph (or sentence or phrase) it might be a bit overwhelming for a complete novice, but this is a book one could reread every few years and find something newly insightful.

If you're not familiar with the parameters of risk, Professor Fischhoff and Mr. Kadvany provide a thorough and accessible explanation of the topic. If I tried to summarize the book, I'd say that first you have to determine what you value (what's bad and what's not); next, you must have a way to measure events (how many bad outcomes and good outcomes can one identify); and lastly, you must have some analytical framework to review the events (try to identify the causes of the outcomes and separate causation from correlation or randomness). Principally, one's focus will be on bad outcomes. Statistics are a common tool in this area. The authors look at a wide range of events - various illnesses, premature births, nuclear energy, and many others. These offer concrete examples for the processes for measuring and analyzing risk. The values issue is essential to determine what one measures and the scope of the analysis. As the authors move through the books, the complexity of risk becomes more apparent.Risk perception arises from the values that society or individuals hold. A risk may not be perceived because there is no general agreement on whether a loss occurs from the event. Since values can and do change, the general agreement on whether there is a loss may also change. The book will address circumstances where this has occurred.I had one very small observation about one study during WWII of the German bombing of London. The study purported to show that the German bombs were falling randomly on London and therefore there was no real way to decide how to seek shelter. I do not challenge the finding of the study that the German bombs were falling randomly on London, but I do strongly believe that the bombs were falling on London, and not, say, on Edinburgh. Thus, the fact that the bombs were falling on London was not random. If one wished to avoid the bombs, get out of London. If this minor observation did nothing else, it convinced me that the authors were forcing me to think about risk.I think the authors will cause you to think about risk as well. If the topic interests you, you would do well to read the book.

Oxford doesn't publish books for "dummies" -- they publish "very short introductions". And this one isn't for dummies. It's an informed overview of the elements of understanding risks and making decisions with respect to them. For most of us, risk is something we address in an informal, rule-of-thumb manner. I think this goes for everything from the risks we run in leaving our homes every day (or even staying in them), to how we invest our 401ks, to our willingness or unwillingness to participate in dangerous sports like rock-climbing or ocean swimming, and even to business risks arising in our professional lives. We trust in our own decision-making, often with little information to go on.We certainly pay a price. For example, if we rely on the flow of information we simply happen to receive, we over-estimate our vulnerability to violent crime, natural disasters, traffic accidents, and the like. Our information flow isn't designed as an unbiased source for risk assessment. The authors have made careers of understanding risk. The most interesting point they make, I think, is that "societies reveal themselves by how they handle dangers." How we measure risks, including what it is that we consider risks to be risks to reveal, in action, what we value, what really matters to us. Is it life, simply put? Is it a life of a particular kind? Is it long life? Is it healthy life?"Very short introductions" are not for professionals -- they are for the majority of us who can benefit from an explicit, reflective framework for something we don't really have an informed way of thinking about. Maybe the most valuable thing we can learn is that there are, in fact, informed ways to think about and make decisions with respect to the risks that are ubiquitous in everyday life.

DISCLAIMER - This is a bit of a book vs movie reviewA real emotional rollercoaster without a dull moment. I have read many biographies and autobiographies in the past. They all have a bit you skim through at some point when the details get too long and arduous to read. Not this! It was very easy to read and full of quotations from friends, family, music industry bigwigs and even psychiatrists."It was the perfect stage for Freddie Mercury: the whole world." Bob Geldof"It wasn't even dark, he was whipping up all this magic in daylight." Dave Hogan (photographer at Live Aid)The explosive start with Live Aid in chapter one mirrors the movie Bohemian Rhapsody to a tee (although the book predates, obviously). Although the main focus is how Queen outperformed everyone that day, there is also a lot of other information like when and how Bob Geldof came up with the whole idea (I did not know that Queens had not been invited to sing in Do They Know It's Christmas!)The book then delves deeply into Freddie's childhood and time in Zanzibar and India. The writer even goes on an expedition to find his birth certificate (which is apparently missing - suspected to have been bought illegally and in someone's private collection now). Her interviews with friends and family shed so much light on Freddie's background and upbringing. (He was called Bucky!)The next thing that struck me were the many differences with the movie - too many to name! How he met and joined the band, how they got their first album recorded, the truth is so different I was wondering if I had watched an adaptation or fictionalisation of the truth at the cinema the day before reading the book (For example, they had a VERY hard time being picked up by radio DJs in the UK and could not get onto playlists at the beginning). However, I felt that his relationship with Mary Austin came across better on screen (although, again, there were many conflicts like, she did not abandon him as portrayed in BR)The wild parties... Oh my God! Jaw dropping! I can understand why those were left out of the movie!I also learned about Peter Freeman, Barbara Valentin and others who were so close to him but did not get a mention in the movie. And Jim Hutton - the true story of how they met is so different! The book has a total of 25 chapters that take the reader from place to place and event to event. Freddie's multi-faceted, almost chameleon-like character came out very well in the story. You follow his as he goes from sleeping on the floor to super rockstardom. You feel each betrayal, each hurdle he had to overcome. There are moments you are cheering him on and moments you find the hedonistic OTT life too much to comprehend. There is also a lot of commentary into what the songs and lyrics mean - the writer's own take on Bo Rap is that Scaramouche (a clown from the commedia dell'arte) was Freddie himself, Galileo the 16th century astronomer is obviously Brian May, and Beelzebub (prince of demons) is Roger Taylor who was the wildest party animal at the beginning. I don't know how much water that holds, to be honest, but back stories to why and how the songs came about is definitely interesting. And the final chapters - I was in tears. There was so much empathy and emotion in the description of his final year, death, funeral and the aftermath, all fans MUST read this. The wealth of information also lead me to some fantastic old videos (like Freddie's performance with the Royal Ballet) that are hidden away on Youtube. Here are some of the titbits that have stayed with me...Did you know - Brian May developed gangrene in his arm after a routine inoculation and there was a real fear of amputation?that Freddie was aerophobic?that after their first appearance of Top of the Pops in 1974 Freddie ran along Oxford St to watch their appearance on a TV in a shop window because he didn't own one himself?that Freddie and Roger ran a market stall in Kensington and were as thick as thieves? (I thought their relationship on BR was actually quite strained)that when they landed in Argentina for the tour in 1981 the flight announcements all stopped and they started playing Queen music instead! There was one comment in earlier reviews that this is a mash-up of all the interviews and books that have come before, with no new material. I disagree. Yes, there were a lot of quotes from various sources, but there were also many insights from the author herself and personal interviews / conversations too. Of course, I have not read all the other biographies of Freddie and Queen out there, but I am sure there is a lot of overlapping bound to happen when you write about the same subject! My only criticism is, because the chapters were broken by personalities and events there was a lot of jumping back and forth in the timeline when you read from one chapter to another - where you stop and go 'wasn't that mentioned earlier?' However, if you are a fan of Queen, or if you have just watched Bohemian Rhapsody, this is a book which would fascinate you.

I like this one better than Freestone's, his was all over the place and all I got were snippets of Freddie.I am still reading this and am about 3/4 of the way through. The writer knows Freddie, but is not a best bud, but did her reaserch and did get real facts. Some of the facts to back this book up came out well after the book was written. It gives insight to how this man lived and some of the why's of his never ending search of belonging and being wanted.. We find Freddie to be flawed, emotional, and caring. Just like us. He was fragile as a person but decisive and impeccable in his work, which was the most important things in his life. This shows the true genius of borderline madness. This gives us the genius we know and love in a light we can accept him in.

I started this book after reading Jim Hutton's Mercury and Me. I wanted to know more about Freddie's life before Jim, more about how Queen was formed and more about Freddie's process of making music and his artistic life. I thought the opening chapter was very well-written and I bought the book based on that, but subsequent chapters were very different in style and when the author doesn't have any personal interaction with the people involved in the biography her writing becomes very flat and dull. Other reviewers are correct in stating that the book often feels that it lacks direction and it often feels haphazard in the order in which certain things are placed.I found it bizarre and tasteless to speculate on who Freddie might have contacted AIDS from. I didn't feel there was enough time spent looking at the musical genius of the band and Freddie's genius in particular. There was a great deal of time going over tedious contracts and legal issues. Very dull stuff. It was supposed to give a sense of how the band struggled in their rise to fame, but it felt very impersonal. This might have been a good time to include interviews with other band members about what was going on during that time. Even though this is a biography about Freddie Mercury, insights of surviving band members about what was going on during their rise to fame would have been more interesting than reading about endless contract negotiations.I felt like the book may have overstated Freddie's connection with Mary, especially given that it was written after Jim Hutton's book. Is it possible that some of the things Freddie said about his relationship with Mary were meant to downplay his homosexuality to the public? Or that they were based on the fact that many of his serious male lovers cheated on him? No one is an entirely reliable narrator of their own life and even this book says that Mary didn't seem entirely comfortable with Freddie's gay friends, some of whom she treated quite cruelly in the end. The author also seems to take a personal stance against Jim Hutton, downplaying his relationship with Freddie, treating him as a less than credible source (even though she seems to have had little contact with him) and taking without question the testimony of people likely to have been jealous of his relationship with Freddie (Barbara Valentine for instance, who seems like a far less honest person than Hutton does). Hutton, by contrast, comes across as honest to a fault in Mercury and Me. He simply didn't know Freddie for his entire career and the book is focused on their relationship, so the view is necessarily narrow and is a memoir rather than a biography. Jones seems determined to discredit Hutton and promote the cause of straight women in Freddie's life, which I found disturbing and distasteful. Also left out was Freddie's rather serious relationship with David Minns, which took place while he was still with Mary. (It's mentioned very briefly, but not in context.)Much of what the author states as fact seems not to have been well-researched and is contradicted in other books. In the end, I was disappointed. The book felt impersonal, often gossipy, and it felt like the author knew very little about music, culture or the arts. There was little written about Freddie's talent as a singer, writer, or musician.I find after reading this that I am still in search of the great Freddie Mercury biography.

Wow. Just a horribly written book about a beautiful beautiful man. There were several moments where I winced at the tackiness, but for most of it was just reading around the horribly clunky storytelling. Long Live Freddie!

One of the more frustrating biographies I've ever read. The flow and chronology is very disjointed. Virtually every page bounces from his youth, to his current events, to future events, and even to events after Freddie's passing. Halfway through it and I'm giving up. Plus no photos, which is a real drag.

Thank you for writing a great story of Freddie Mercury, without writing all the trash that others have written.Freddie was truly a Genius and a Perfectionist. You brought out the best of him and. He entertained us, touched us with how we related to His music and His Performances.. .Thank You !

For anyone who liked Freddie Mercury this is a very good read. I could have done with less facts about when songs came out, etc.but this book does a good job telling about Freddie.
