Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, the Indie Label That Got Big and Stayed Small, by John Cook

From Publishers Weekly

Freelance reporter Cook and Merge cofounders McCaughan and Ballance trace the history of the North Carolina–based record label that started in a bedroom and now releases some of indie rock's biggest names. The story is composed as a book-long conversation between McCaughan and Ballance (also founding members of Superchunk, hailed as the next Nirvana in the 1990s and one of Merge's first major hits) and myriad other voices from the music industry. Started in 1989 in Chapel Hill, Merge always put music and musicians first, with McCaughan and Ballance hand-stuffing the label's first seven-inch releases and eschewing contracts in an effort to keep things friendly. In a prime example of its dedication to artistic vision over pure profit, Merge took a gamble on Stephin Merritt and Magnetic Fields's ambitious three-disc opus, 69 Love Songs, when any major label would have balked. That record made numerous top 10 lists in 1999 and has sold more than 150,000 copies. While some of the label's artists may be beyond the scope of the casual music fan, bands like Magnetic Fields, Spoon and Arcade Fire demonstrate how vital Merge is to the indie rock landscape. Okay, I just found out about this book. I read some of the good reviews and some of the bad and figured for 15 bucks it was worth a try. And I am very glad I bought it!First of all, since Superchunk is such an integral part of the first two thirds of Merge's history, if you're interested in Superchunk you'll love this book. I was hoping it would go into that with a little depth and was very surprised to find out how much. There is also very honest appraisal of the band's fallen stock in the last decade. As for "how to run an indie label", this book is great. There's a lot in there about their early business model, how they handled increasing demand, why they didn't have contracts at first, what forced them to start contracts, how big labels treated both Superchunk the band and Merge the label, and much more. For the people who said this book is basically an advertisement, I was surprised to find people readily admitting to guilt - Superchunk admitting to remixing "Hyper Enough" for radio, Merge themselves pushing their artists on the world through definite non-indie channels. One of the coolest things about this book is if there's a Merge artist you like - from the obscure Butterglory to the ubiquitous Arcade Fire - there's good stuff in there, from both label and artist. Find out how Stephin Merritt annoyed Mac & Laura (it wasn't the major label jump) or Spoon's bass player suing Spoon for allegedly co-writing the first Spoon album (I have been a Spoon fan for over 10 years and never knew that; explains why they don't play songs from the first LP anymore!).To conclude: GOOD BOOK. LOTS OF GOOD PICTURES. NEEDED MORE PICTURES OF LAURA!

Preface: Superchunk is my favorite band. But this book -- told via a well-crafted string of dialogue from musicians, producers, A&R reps and friends -- is not just about Superchunk. It's about a community of musicians who got together with the sole purpose of creating and sharing music.("Come on, fellahs, let's get together and write a song!") I think of Merge as the big brother who lets you peek at his LPs when he's not looking and might let you make a mix tape to share with your peers. (That's how I learned about Iron Maiden as well as Anvil. Remember Tank: The Filth Hounds of Hades?) Through my interest in Superchunk (thanks to a mix tape from Todd -- forever grateful), I discovered a lot of other great bands on the label. Certainly it helps if you are a fan of any of the featured bands: Superchunk, Magnetic Fields, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lambchop, Butterglory; but it's a great story and gives insight into the changing music industry (the decline of corporate rock). I also like to think Our Noise might inspire you to get off your butt and make Your Own Noise heard -- whether it's home-brewing, writing songs, RPGing, gardening, knitting whatever. (The perfect graduation gift? Required reading for Harvard MBA?) Now, perhaps this book would be boring to many people. After all, I grew up with Merge discovering the bands, seeing the shows (Halloween at State College changed my life). But, I just love how the story is revealed with honesty, humor, thoughtfulness in their own words. Who is they? A lot of different people. In fact, there is very little narration. This book is really well constructed, much like a documentary film. The relationships are vivid and real. There's a lot of pride, but little pretension. Great photos, too. Mysteries still remain. Like why was that guy yelling hot dogs and hamburgers at Merge 10?

This book props Merge, rightfully so, as the model that any and all record labels should model themselves after. What this book does well is to establish a well run and caring label as an ally to artists and their fans. The evidence throughout the book of Merge's steadfast confidence in artists leads to the conclusion that the label is responsible for encouraging artists to continue their work and giving them a venue to do so. The world is left a pusher and more vibrant place because of this.99% of the worry and guilt that music fans feel in the digital age is aimed at musicians and the financial trouble that only seems likely to worsen. This book places an unlikely hero, the independent labels, as the lifeblood of the community that music is created in and the true root of concern that fans must feel. Will other communities like Merge emerge should their methods become too dated to sustain? Possibly. However, Merge has proven itself to be a treasure and a prized gem of the music community. It's one that deserves our attention and this book does a masterful job of snatching that attention and holding onto it.

Years ago, after I read A Course Called Ireland, Tom Coyne became the only author in my well traveled path down hundreds of tomes of non-fiction and fiction literature that I ever tracked down to say...wow! I loved this!As is true of Tom’s other books, his new release, A Course Called Scotland is about more than just golf. This man knows his words, when to choose them and then where to put them in a sentence - seamlessly and unforced. Frankly, I think he could write about the internecine battle between the pansy and the primrose for garden supremacy and make it interesting.A Course Called Scotland is not a murder mystery nor does it contain passages of lurid sex. It is about a man, his state of mind, and a game that continually screws with it...despite all his other talents, Tom, on occasion, has had to struggle with his own demons, but hey, who hasn’t? (He manages to slay at least one by book’s end).In addition to being a consummate wordsmith, Tom has great respect for the game, its history and traditions; he not only has “game” himself, but a helluva lot of stamina, to boot (on many fronts). Different people look for different things in a book about a guy trying to discover if the secret to his life and the secret of golf are somehow intertwined...while simultaneously trying to qualify for The Open Championship - all I know is that you will not be sorry if you get this one and give it a whirl. Two (2) thumbs up.

What a blast! Tom Coyne's crazy golf travels are back, with a journey even more epic/insane than Ireland. His ability to describe the courses of Scotland is only surpassed by the humor he relates through he and his friends' travels along the way. More than just a golf book, I felt this to be an amazing tale of the human condition as Tom conquers much more than 111 courses in 57 days, which in and of itself should be enough. Can't wait to read again and see what "Course" comes next!

I really enjoyed reading Tom Coyne's book, "A Course Called Ireland", and didn't expect that he'd be able to surpass it...Boy, was I ever wrong! "A Course Called Scotland" features a person I would much rather play golf and hang out with, versus the "Old Tom Coyne" from his Irish adventure.I absolutely love how Tom connected with his family, friends, fans and readers before, during, and after this latest journey; he is truly one of the most accessible authors I've ever seen.Just as impressive, Tom Coyne articulates his growth as a golfer with genuine emotion, painting beautiful word pictures. This book resonated with me on every page, and got me even more excited to play golf in Scotland next month! This is an amazing story...If you have a love for our game, you'll be even more enamored as you join Tom Coyne on this voyage of discovery!

Tom Coyne's previous book, "A Course Called Ireland" is one of my all-time favorite books. I've probably read it a dozen times. When I heard he was doing a new book, this time about Scotland, I thought it couldn't be done. Nothing could live up to that previous book. Was I wrong. A Course Called Scotland is incredible. I'd give it six stars if possible. My wife - who is not an avid golf fan - puts it best: Tom Coyne's books are great because they're not about golf: they're about people.Coyne introduces a new character in Scotland, and the book is an epic odyssey that will have you packing your bags for the highlands.

This is a GREAT golf book. If you have any interest in the game, especially how it is played in Scotland, this is a must read. But it is so much more. Whether you are obsessed with golf or have never held a club in your hand, I recommend “A Course Called Scotland.”Nearly ten years ago, I received a book as a gift that changed my perspective on the game of golf. I loved playing the game, but knew little of its origins and how differently the game is played on true links courses. I thoroughly enjoy reading in “A Course Called Ireland” how golf is played in that part of the world, but I was also introduced to Tom Coyne’s view on that island – its people, its politics, its walkability, and its history (and its golf). Really, I was introduced to one man’s love of Ireland and this beautiful, frustrating game. Now, in what can be called a sequel, we are able to enjoy yet another great golf book, but also another great love story. “A Course Called Scotland” is about love of a game and its origins, but also love of family and friends, love of an attitude and way of life that exists in a nation roughly the size of the state of Maine, love of landscape created by nature rather than heavy machinery, and at the end of the day (or an insane two month journey) love of life itself.I received a 100% satisfaction rating from people I recommended “A Course Called Ireland”; family and friends that are golfers and non-golfers found it informative and entertaining. I believe “A Course Called Scotland” is both of those, but is also a window into the soul of the game and an imperfect man – a man who is full of faults but also full of love and a desire to better himself. As you turn the pages, you are there with the author fighting exhaustion, the unexpected, and self-doubt during this journey – not just in Scotland, but during all our days. This book will teach you, make you laugh, move you, and maybe make you dream of a better life on and off the course. You’ll be glad you read it on your journey.
