Things I loved about this book: The Sijos, Jason Reynolds' ability to add mundane details into his stories and normalize characters, the very present parents, the rich and detailed side characters.Things I'm struggling with: This story, is obviously, about Spiderman. Throughout the story there is a build up to the battle scene, with Miles' Spidey sense alerting him and the way too evil history teacher. It felt like all of this build up happened and then the battle scene was 10 pages long and then it was over.However, the more I think about this, the more I think that it's done this way on purpose. Being Spiderman is just one part of Miles. He is also a son, and a friend, and a student, and a teenage boy trying to navigate his crush. This story tells one small period of time in his life. Once he has defeated the villain, he still has real life demons to answer to and problems of racism and discrimination that cannot be as easily defeated as the larger-than-life villain.So while this was unsettling to me when I read it, it forced me ask myself a lot of questions and grapple with why the story was told this way and the answers make the grappling worth it.tl;dr Jason Reynolds is masterful in his story telling. This is exactly the story Donald Glover was talking about years ago. Spiderman is just a normal, smart black kid from Brooklyn.

I have been struggling to find books my daughter will read and this one was a hit! She loved all the excitement in this book and at the end she was feverishly flipping pages and asked for the next in series! She declared that she needed to read more like these.

Most importantly my son loves this book. When I helped him with his book report I came to appreciate the social conflict that played such an important role in Miles Morales' life. This is not a beat em up, bang em up, good guy wins sorta book. It rises well above all that and delivers a powerful message in humanity. What is that message? I'm not telling! That would just spoil everything!My son had a little difficulty grasping the real message of this book and therefore challenged his highest intellect. We had a lot of quality time working on his book report together.This is now a family favorite!

My daughter and I loved the movie so much that I had to get her the novel. We are reading it together and there is just so much more to it! Which is usually the case when you are talking the book over the movie. excellent purchase.

great read! Love Miles Morales as a character and it's nice to read about him more. There's not too much action which I wasn't a fan of but the story was nice for a quick read and a laugh or too. There are some plot points that don't go anywhere but I feel can be brought up in a sequel if needed. Overall, great book

With habitats ranging from sea level to over 3,800 meters, the small Neotropical country of Costa Rica encompasses more than fifteen distinct life zones and contains a large percentage of all the butterfly species known from Central America. In this field guide, a sequel to the volume on Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Nymphalidae, Philip DeVries provides the first detailed treatment of over 250 species of Costa Rican butterflies in the family Riodinidae. Drawing from his extensive fieldwork, museum research, and surveys of scientific literature, DeVries presents the means to identify riodinid butterflies to the species level and gives an overview of their natural history. This guide illustrates nearly all of the Costa Rican species in color and provides a large sample of detailed line drawings and scanning electron micrographs of riodinid early stages for the first time ever. The book's coverage makes it useful for identifying riodinids throughout Mexico, Central America, and substantial portions of South America. The introductory chapter brings together a large body of material that applies directly to understanding riodinid butterflies in general. The taxonomy, distribution, and natural history of each taxon is discussed in detail. This is a wonderful book on butterflies, well-researched, more photos than you can review in a day, and a joy to behold. DeVires has provided the amateur, the professional or the everyday reader with all the known information of every butterfly found in Costa Rica. ( Yes, many of them get to the U.S.) DeVires' attention to detail, his photos and his comments demonstrate discipline ordinary writers can only envy. Also be warned, this is "Volume II" of his massive opus to our winged-friends. You will have to find "Volume I" on the used book sites. DeVires is now teaching and researching at the University of New Orleans, but at the end of the day, this volume and the previous volume will stand as testimony to what a field researcher can do. Buy this book.

This book, together with the vol.1, is a surprisingly complete publication of butterflies and thier natural history written by a single author. I put two volumes and Corbet/Pendlebury's Butterflies of West Malaysia on a book shelf'near at hand and look at the pages quite often. Now I am too old to go to Costa Rica to look at the butterflies, but the pages of this book gives me clear images of imaginary travel in the jungles in Costa Rica. I hope the 3rd voleume of this book on Hairstreaks/Blues or Skippers will be published in near future.

This hefty book is not a book you would like to drag along in you daypack (I tried, so I know). Yet, you will need it around (so, in your lodge or tent) when you're walking the rainforests and trying to make out what you've seen. It gives a clear description, added to clear drawings, of all the butterflies in the described families. That leads me to the only drawback: it's "just" a number of famlies described here, so the title is somewhat misleading. I'm eagerly awaiting the follow-up with the rest of the Lepidoptera, hoping that they will be covered in a similar way.

For all of you who are looking for a good quality source book for your art projects this is the book that will provide you, not only, with detailed drawings but also with beautiful color images of Costa Rican butterflies. I only wish there were more color photographs of the insect, but since I researched line drawings to incorporate them into design this book even exceeded my needs. It also helped my seven year old daughter to understand and appreciate the complexity of this species not only its beauty. The text is easy to understand and can make a good vacation reading

After traveling different countries and using various field guides, I can say that this one needs a lot of improvement. This book only covers a small section of species. The specimens that are used are tattered and some are difficult to use for ID purposes. In most guides, the photo description on the left usually include the page number for the text, this one doesn't. So, you have to check the name and look to the index to cross over to the text page. Speaking of names, they are only called by the Latin scientific name. This is probably not a big issue since most do not have one.Now, the text is very thorough and there have been a great deal of time and patience to acquire the information and data. I still would recommend this book despite its flaws. So far, it is probably the only book describing Costa Rican Butterflies.

What a delightful book! The writing style is fun and engaging while the content is astounding in its breadth and depth. This is a book that doesn't make you feel stupid, but actually enlightened. It put a whole new light on just what biodiversity means from the largest animals to the microbiology that we require. You will delight in reading this book and will want to share it with your friends!

I’m an eco-dispairist. Surprisingly, I felt actual optimism reading this book. It’s scientifically well shored up but chatty and warm as well. Dunn acknowledged several chapters that had been deleted. I wish they hadn’t been. Perhaps a sequel? I summarized the toxoplasmosis review for the waitress at my small town diner. We decided we’ve both had it, and she told me the next morning she’d dreamed about it. Yeah, it’s that kind of book. I’m ready to check out the rest of what he’s written though I suspect what he published for tenure and promotion may not be as reader friendly. I read the kindle edition. No problems there.

A very good book of popular science. It's interesting, informative, and entertaining.It can be a bit creepy to read what is living in our homes but also a good way to learn about the world around us.Highly recommended!Many thanks to Perseus Books and Netgalley for this ARC

I like it when researchers can bring their results to people in an understandable and interesting way. If you are squeamish about germs this probably isn't the book for you. But for those who like to know about what lives with them it's a good read. The information about black mold and drywall, the yeasts on a bakers hands, the community that lives in your shower head, are all fascinating as well as all the other topics. I now have something to show my husband when he complains about the spider webs in the corners of my office and all the animals and plants I haul inside. Biodiversity is good. Healthy people live in homes with lots of it.

Brilliant concept, great delivery. Some parts seemed redundant but this was an entertaining and educational read as a whole. Loved the part about Toxoplasma gondii.

This book about the presence of microbes in our bodies and environment, including our homes, was eye-opening for me. Glad to hear most microbes are our friends. Easy reading, clear and at times humorous, this book has dominated my thinking and conversations ever since I read it!

A wonderful well written book for those that are interested in what lives around them (and literally on them). I wish I knew how to unhinge my mind like Lockwood to free it from literal, confining prose-thinking. Her poetry steps into a temple of sorts, a special place of worship for the imagination. Her poems are like Kandinsky's paintings: a lot of non-sense is going on and on the surface it looks like a mass of confusion and can of worms jerked open by a predator but you don't care because you've having such a good time watching the show from the sidelines, where some character from Twin Peaks is giving you a buzz cut. (Not to say her stuff is surreal.) She takes personification to the extreme; for example she personifies "The Dunk" and gives him/her a rich, full life. Soon, you expect The Dunk to get married, buy a house, and produce little baby Durants. You wonder if she smokes crack or nutmeg, something healthy I'm sure, to escape the rational, lineal mind. And like a Kandinsky painting, somehow it resolves into wholesome goodness. Nobody writes like her. With time, I wonder if she'll mellow into a Joseph Ceravolo. Agree/Disagree? I enjoyed this collection of poems - more so, even, than "Balloon Pop Outlaw Black": the more focused writing-style in this collection appealed to me. Interspersed with Lockwood's wonderful abstract imagery, I enjoyed the contrast between the playful and the dark on the subject of bodies and borders. Though some reviews complain of the sexually-exlipicit and raunchiness in the poems: I love it, and I think Lockwood really handles the content well. Particular standouts: "List of Cross-Dressing Soldiers," "Rape Joke," "The Father and Mother of American Tit-Pics," "The Hypno-Domme Speaks, and Speaks and Speaks," "Revealing Nature Photographs," "The Fake Tears of Shirley Temple," "Nessie Wants to Watch Herself Doing It," "Is Your Country a He or a She in Your Mouth," "The Whole World Gets Together and Gangbangs a Deer," and "He Marries the Stuffed-Owl Exhibit at the Indiana Welcome Center."

Poetry-wise, I am lost. Sometimes I still try to read it, but usually give up after the first few lines. I'm not the only one, I'm sure.Once upon a time in Ohio -- this is true -- I sat on the floor in a student-jammed room just a few arms' lengths from Allen Ginsberg. And nothing he said connected with me. Nothing. My major take-away was that Mr. Ginsburg, before he sat down, unbuckled his belt, unbuttoned his jeans, and unzipped his fly. Was he symbolically getting naked in front of the crowd or were his jeans too tight? I don't know! But I'm sitting in the midst of all this High Literary Seriousness not getting it, feeling irrelevant, looking at Ginsberg's belt buckle flopped over and hanging in space. That pretty well summarizes my experience with poetry.Patricia Lockwood, however, is the exception. I never read the NY Times anymore, but I did on that Sunday when Lichtenstein's piece on her appeared. She seemed to be a very intriguing person. Her whole family, her dad the priest, the sight-impaired husband who champions her, her brother the Marine, the mom who sticks up for her -- intriguing people, and a real family from what I could discern.So I bought her book, Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals. And guess what: there is still a lot I don't understand. But I am here to tell you that the woman truly has it. Don't know exactly what 'it' is, don't know what to call it, but she's got it big time.Her writing shape-shifts. The inanimate comes alive and speaks. Land becomes personified and sexual. I often had to wonder, who or what is saying this? A lot of images and phrases re-appear from poem to poem. "Between two legs." Hawks. Fire and burning. An igniting match becomes the eye seeing the flame or vice versa. Geography (!) is a recurring theme. Gender crosses back and forth. Roundness and round objects -- her mouth, the earth, a round lens, the moon, ball dunking -- keep showing up. Innocence ruined, trust betrayed. Vitality. It's all connected.Rape Joke, probably her best known poem, has hard narrative power. Nothing funny about it, but plenty of irony. Rape Joke is lava that has skinned over and turned cool on the outside but is still molten inside.In the one before it, Why Haven't You Written, the last lines hit me with a silent thud, because I know I've been there. Assuming I got it right. Not sure if I got any of this right.Anyway, this is getting too long, but I just want to say her work is worth it. The reviewer here who said that her work is "butterflies flying" compared to butterflies pinned? That's a good way of putting it.What I would really like to read are the one or more novels she wrote that never got published, the ones she left in the woods, bear-like. Wish she would dig those up, go indie, just as is, like now. Go the New York route, it'll take forever (and they way they've handled inventory of her books … don't get me started). Right now, she's got 30k Twitter followers, according to the Times piece. Wow. For a poet to do that -- a poet living in Kansas! -- is wildly impressive.

I did not love Lockwood's highly referential and metatextual poetry at first: the layers of puns and odd references. Yet the changing landscape of social media fluent poetry has led me to really appreciate Lockwood's highly colloquial poetry because her work demands attention and engagement, rewards re-reading, and resists conventional turns of phrase and idea. This collection was seemingly made famous by the spreading of "Rape Joke," which contains Lockwood's more focus on contemporary concerns and seems made to be viral, but her other poetry is far more slippery, and this is clearly on display here. If you were hesitant a few years ago or thought that this collection was too-clever-by-half, I strongly suggest a re-read these few years ago. I found it very rewarding.

Everything is so funny and clever that you're really jealous that you didn't write it yourself until the full emotional weight of everything hits you and then you're just thankful that Lockwood is steering this ship because she's a master at it

I used this as a fill in for our chapel time at school. It was a hit. The students loved it. They were engaged. The stories are funny but based on Biblical truth. I would say every youth leader needs to have this!

I loved this book, very easy to understand and learn from. I am a watercolor artist looking for new avenues and this has been a most helpful book into the world of pouring. It's very useful that it tells you all that you need with examples and is so freely given. I love her style and use of color but I most appreciate how she shares every step, a lot of art books only give you bits and pieces and expect you to figure out the rest. Excellent ideas presented. In examining one's existence one should read first Socrates, then Kierkegaard and then Fromm... This is a collection of essays/lectures concerning the way one makes decisions to compromise on the values held dear, the language we use to describe them and how a therapist relates to the patient. The art of listening is an essential part of modern mindfulness. Listening to one's self as we relate to both the internal and the external... How we adjust ourselves to become happy or clear think and thoughtful. We must first be ready to relate as a whole individual and second to actually relate. Fromm jumps back and forth as though in a debate with Frued and Jung, but his ideas are clear and concise, easy to understand and easy to implement... Brilliant!!!

Listening is the art of catharsis. Catharsis is not the product of speaking or free association as one might think because it does not occur if we wander about saying the same thing in our homes. Lying alone on a couch speaking the same words produce no affective change. It is in the art of careful listening that the healing process occurs. While the very end of this book deals with that art the use of this title is a misnomer for the bulk of the content. But in Fromm style, the academic thoroughness makes him a great summarizer and synthesizer of the Vienna Analytical Movement. The reader should know that another less known hero coaches him from the shadows. Karen Horney his senior and mentor can be heard between the lines, thoroughly present in spirit in this and many of Fromm's works.

Interesting at first, but eventually it lost my interest. I will go back and try it again one day. I expected it to be a lot about how to be a great listener, but really it is more of an explanation of psychoanalysis.

Fromm has always been a favorite of mine, "The Art of Loving" continuously on our book shelves, in fact while looking for another addition as a gift was when I stumbled on Fromm's "The Art of Listening" . It was one of Fromm's unpublished books recently released, and a treasure. Well written sensible, everyone listens, it's just that most of us don't do it very well, and this book helps to really move that skill up a notch. A great companion to the Art of Loving, in different time it could have been the prequel. Try it you'll like it, a great read, written with Fromm's sensible but interesting, scattered with anecdotes, it's on my gift list for this year.

I expected a book on listening and the art of conversation. It is instead a textbook for Psychiatrists and the title is derived from the last chapter. Not what I wanted and the title was misleading for me, but probably not if you were a young psychoanalyst in training.

Though it was composed from lectures plus other formal and even informal contacts with Fromm, it speaks with his voice and presents his thinking on issures not earlier addresses in his published works.Though it's constructed from Fromm's oral lectures and other formal and informal talks it speaks with his voice and deals with important issuers not addressed in his former written works. Passed my NY state Notary Test of the first try with the help of this book. Forget all the other study guides - this is all you need. PLEASE do the study guide IN ORDER. . Took test, got results in 7 -10 days. Submitted applications and less then 4 weeks later I got my license. Total time - Spend 4- 6 weeks reviewing this book. Take the practice tests. You need to get 28 multiple choice questions (out of 40) to pass.I was issued my notary license in less about 4 weeks from taking the test to submitting application. $15 test fee, $60 for 4 years. Plus the stamp custom order on Vista Print is $42 or XrubberStamp has a less expensive 5 line one for less than $20 with shipping (no prime)

If you want to pass the NYS Notary Public exam on the first try, this is the book you need. No other material necessary. I read the book twice and took both practice exams in the back and passed the exam on the first try. The license law is given to you both in long and short format (on the Kindle version which you can toggle between the two) and the questions are given to you in T&F, fill in, and multiple choice. The best thing about the answers given is they reinforce the material by providing additional information. In other words, the information is given to you in such a way that it's easy to digest and memorize.

If you want to pass the exam on the first time, buy this book. I read/studied a bit each day prior to taking the exam. I found the exam very easy and passed on my first try. You don't get a numeric score back; they just tell you if you pass or fail, but I felt comfortable with every single question on the exam and doubt I got anything wrong. All thanks to this book. I used no other study guides besides this book. Buy it and skip all the other nonsense!

Great book, easy to absorb, and good format. The practice tests were spot-on and helped me pass with no problem. The wording is simplified, so I could easily understand the laws that were being discussed without getting too lost in dense legalese.

Turned out to be an excellent study tool. Makes the Notary Law easy to understand. I read it cover to cover, quizzing myself around 10 times. Passed on the first try!!! But the actual test was harder than I thought it would be. The 40 multiple choice questions are worded differently than in this book that lead you to doubt yourself. They give it a twist. Go with your gut. You studied hard. You know your stuff. And memorize the fees. Good luck!!!

This book is all you need. period. Study It completely. Do all the questions , read rationales and when you have doubts go back and review the highlights. If you really study it and finish the book front and back and key work understand the material you will PASS ! Good luck everyone !

If you're looking for a book to help you study and properly prepare you look no further. I used this book to study and pass the notary test on my first try. Book has a great format, easy to understand and the test are an excellent study guide. I was nervous when I purchased this book, but I sat down to take my exam and didnt miss a beat. Finished my exam in 20 minutes

Helped me pass the exam on the first try. Includes the statutes followed by easy to understand plain English versions. A ton of practice questions and two actual exams. Definitely recommend.
