About the Author

Wendell Berry (b. 1934) is a novelist, poet, farmer, and environmental writer and activist. He has published over fifty books, including more than two dozen books of poetry, sixteen essay collections, and eight novels. In 2010 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama, and in 2013 he was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2016 he received the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Book Critics Circle. He has made his home with his wife, Tanya Berry, in Henry County, Kentucky, for the last fifty years.Jack Shoemaker is the Editorial Director of Counterpoint Press, publishing the work of Gary Snyder, M.F.K. At the end of the previous novel, Lady Julia and Brisbane, after an amazing sequence of "yes/no" reversals, had finally recognized their love for each other and gotten married. That, for me, created a hope that in the next novel, they would mature in their interactions, but--unfortunately--that was not the case, and we are left with another situation where they hide secrets and work as much against each other as with each other. And that is why I'm not likely to read any more books in this series.That said, the setting of this novel (India) is portrayed richly, and some of the secondary characters do develop and change (Portia and Plum, for instance). I may, I suppose, come back at some point, but for now I am jumping ship and looking for some new series to pursue.

I enjoy the clever banter and familial nature of these stories. Glimpses of Victorian England and the changing lives of that era, with the advent of trains, the telephone and women's lives. Also enjoy the relationship between Julia and Brisbane very much. How can you go wrong with half Scot and half gypsy?

Great books to read at night before bed. Interesting and engaging but not so compelling that I can't fall asleep. Strange praise, I know, but I need books like that in my life! They hit the spot!

I loved the writing, the characters, and the situations these ladies continually get into. It is a fun series, and I would love to purchase more of her books!

Lady Julia Grey remains as amazing as ever!

Please note that I borrowed this with my KU subscription.The author recommends this for ages 0 to 8 and P to 2.The little bird was quite vocal in the fact that he was not a bird~~Drawings are cute and I did get a laugh out of the Statue of Liberty. And, if I can laugh at my age, I can see the little ones laughing, too.Most highly recommended.

This book was very funny. We like Sammy a lot because he always makes us laugh. Sammy is the funniest bird on earth!
