The book is overly technical. It explains a lot of the reasons why the Mediterranean diet works, which is fine. It then fails to deliver on the main reason someone might be buying this book: It never explains how to turn this information into a workable eating plan. In fact, in several places it says it would be impossible to get all the nutrients you need from modern foods and suggests purchasing supplements. Having been to Dr. Sears website, I have no doubt the supplements will be able to purchased there.As someone who has been a long time adherent to the Zone Diet and can credit it with being the reason behind my relative good health, this book was an extreme disappointment. I had been reading the science behind the Mediterranean diet and attempting to meld it with my zone methods myself. I was hoping this book would provide clear, concrete directions on how to accomplish this. Perhaps updated food block lists? Recommendations on a number of blocks to be devoted to certain vegetables? The book did none of that. In fact, if I was not already familiar with the Zone diet, I wouldn't know even where to start. My takeaway would be to 'eat vegetables' and 'avoid breads & processed foods.' This is good advice, certainly, but hard for some people to implement without greater structure. In fact, it's this very structure that drives people to implement the Zone diet over more holistic diets in the first place.To summarize: If you'd like to understand some of the science behind why the Mediterranean diet works, this plan may interest you. If you're looking to implement or adjust an eating plan, this book does not provide the needed tools to do so.
This book is good. It also includes recipes which I really loved. It takes time to get used to a healthy diet but if you persevere you reach to a point that you crave healthy food. With this diet you lose weight but slowly, for me at least because I am 61 years old, but I prefer to lose slowly and steadily as the most important thing is your health and this is definitely a healthy diet.
Awesome recipes, new information on polyphenols and the faulty association of gluten itself as the harmful component to most people (he blames the overprocessed carbs and high glycemic indices rather than gluten. This is consistent with my observations. I've been wheat free for 15 years but not necessarily gluten free. Some of those gluten free baked goods are more addictive than the traditional kinds, since they're made from ultra-refined rice flour and powdered sugar. BLAST of glucose.He also recognizes his earlier books advocated for too much fruit, especially for women, who tend to me more sensitive to fructose. Another great thing is his recipes contain the full caloric/nutritional information rather than merely "blocks" or protein, carb, and fat. I'm very happy with this book! Recipes are modern, unique, and fairly simple to make.... I love Dr. Sears! Here's to 19 years of zone-compatible living! :)
I have followed Dr. Sears recommendations since the 1990's. At that time very view medical doctors offered nutritional information, since they were not taught about the subject in their medical training. His first book, "ENTER THE ZONE", was like a cold drink of water in a desert. I am an eighty-seven year old statistic of one and my primary doctor considers my health well above average. The cost of Dr. Sear's books are much less than a monthly life insurance payment or a trip to the doctor's office.
Dr Sears has an important story. Chronic inflammation inside our cells from junk food is the cause of most of our disorders of aging including cancer, heart problems, auto-immune, diabetes, etc. Omega-3's & a lot of polyphenols from vegetables are the answer. He's updated his prior works & put the technical details in appendices. Fish oil, polyphenols & the zone life style are the anti-inflammatory measures of choice. There are also algae based, vegetarian omega-3's available as well. One issue he overlooks is IGF-1 from excess animal protein, but it is NOT a high protein diet. He is clear that it is a moderate protein life style, which can come from vegetables. The IGF-1 effect on growing cancer cells is still being researched, so omitting it as a topic is not a serious flaw.As is the trend in health books, he includes recipes. He allows real, extra-virgin olive oil, but that will be hard to find in American markets. It's too bad the health book writers aren't on the same page, but on one point they agree - we need a lot more vegetables in our diet and a lot less vegetable oil from processed junk food (corn oil, soy oil). You'll also learn about a super-food - maqui berry with an off-the-charts ORAC value and the "master switch of life", AMP Kinase. You can adhere to the current popular diets - paleo, various types of vegetarian - and still be in the zone to reduce inflammation. Other prominent health book writers on-board the anti-inflammation band wagon are Dr Hyman, MD, Dr Andrew Weil, MD & Dr Perlmutter, MD.Update - As of 1-18, PhDs & MDs on YouTube are reporting inflammation may be the underlying cause of cancer, heart disease, auto-immune and the neurological illness of seniors. MDs doing YouTube videos on the EPA & DHA effect on inflammation include Dr Greger & Dr Fuhrman. Not bad if one intervention ie. change of diet, can solve most of your aging related problems.
