Fernholz does a great job at developing a compelling narrative about the brief history of New Space. While a large extent of the book is centered around the "rocket billionaires", a wider perspective on the context in which commercial space has evolved in recent years is also provided. I especially enjoyed learning about how NASA has changed in response to the pioneerism of Musk and Bezos. The author makes no effort to hide his admiration for SpaceX and Blue Origin, which might be reflected in his depiction of their more established competitors. Biased or not, that does not compromise the quality of a well-researched book mostly based on first-hand interviews. Without any doubt, a mandatory reading for anyone interested in New Space that also happens to be entertaining for a broader audience.

Highly readable account of the current business of space exploration. As a (retired) finance professor, I greatly appreciated the fairly detailed financial analysis. As a physics graduate, I wish there had been more about the physics involved in spacecraft development. Whilst I'm happy to allot 5* to this, I do wonder whether the very favourable light shone on SpaceX, compared with its competitors, is because (a) SpaceX genuinely deserve this, or (b) the much greater flow of information and access from that company has had an effect.

Very interesting read. Written so it is fun to read. Lots of information dished up without getting boring.

Good reading. Private money is what's needed.

Great overview/summary of the private space industry

I have been slightly aware of these private space companies like SpaceX for some time, and definitely rooting for them in principle. The mostly successful launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket last month sure grabbed my attention... especially the landing of the two booster rockets, which appeared like something out of science fiction and was the most stunning demonstration of technology I have seen in decades. Of course, putting that car into orbit around the sun will forever be a legendary publicity stunt for both SpaceX and Tesla, but it also put an undeniable spotlight on the fact that it was a private company led by one extraordinary man who accomplished this.Well this book does not cover that most recent event, but it does give the reader a great understanding of both Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, plus a lot of historical/political background about NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic. The book is pretty well written and I found it exciting to read.While NASA has done some very good work in space exploration, I feel that ultimately the future lies in the commercialization of space. I am very glad that these companies are finally getting past the seemingly insurmountable hurdles that previously limited space exploration only to governmental efforts. This book documents what I believe to be a pivotal moment in human history.

My husband and I really enjoyed this book. The author, Tim Fernholz, is a reporter, blogger, and editor who mostly covers genres within the realm of politics, government, business, and the people intertwined within... With a wealth of experience as a publications writer, Fernholz writes a lively story of this century's new space race. This appears to be his first book? I was not able to find much information concerning other books he has written if so... Within the pages of Rocket Billionaires, it's clear that these corporate heads are not only egocentric, but they have a serious interest in making money. Rocket Billionaires covers the history of the space industry and its direction. Classified as a "dramatic business narrative," with a focus on Musk and Bezos, this book demonstrates how corporations are attempting to govern how civilization will take their next step in space by either colonizing the moon, sending people into space, or being the first to land on Mars... Overall, this book was written well, intriguing, and an overall fascinating read. We have mixed feelings on how NASA is now corporately sponsored and Space Travel has been brought to you by Amazon and Tesla... mainly because we are children of Reagan's administration where space was everyone's dream and, as typical Gen Xers, have some trust issues with trusting corporations... but that may be just us...

This is a devotion for families to read in preparation to celebrate Easter. I wanted to make that clear because I've seen reviews of Christian books where non-Christians complain that they were misled.I read this aloud to two boys who were 12 and 10. They enjoyed the story. At first, I found it a bit difficult (tedious) to read. In fact, I tried it once before putting it away. I took it out a year later and decided to stick it out. I think that's because the first two or three chapters are long and slow in comparison to the rest of the book. The young male protagonist is initially upset that he will have a female house guest. I didn't find him appealing because he seemed to make such a big deal of it.However, the story picks up after that and continues to move along at a nice clip. The boys enjoyed the story and always wanted to read additional chapters. (As a side note: they could have read it themselves but we like to enjoy some books together.) At first I had wondered if we (I) would make it through before Easter, since we began the book late. We also skipped some days when we were busy. We still made it through by combining some chapters every time we read.The conflict here is pretty high stakes, which is engaging. There is essentially a mystery to solve. It is still fun for an adult or older reader who knows their Bible.One interesting aspect is the detail given about the temple, especially in relation to the Fortress of Antonia.Some real people are mixed in with the story but fictional elements are added to their lives. For example, an apostle is credited as having a daughter, but that is never mentioned in Scripture. Very young children may find that confusing.From what I recall, characterization is good. The protagonist is the most well developed. His friends also have distinct and consistent personalities. The mother and brothers are shuttled to the side. For example, one of the boys is described as having a lying problem. That goes nowhere.The editing could have been better. I told the boys that I didn't want them to read the book themselves because there are so many misplaced commas. There may have been other problems, but I don't remember them now.I also don't know that we got a whole lot out of the devotional verse(s) and message at the end of each chapter. I thought some didn't quite fit with the chapter we had read.Despite its flaws, we really enjoyed the story. I think many Christian families with enjoy. It made the boys want to read all the others in the series. I wish there were more Easter stories like this one.

We have loved the Advent stories by this author, but this story is a disappointment. It wasn't nearly as engaging, but we were willing to muddle through in hopes that the climax would be as exciting as the others. However as we read through the chapters beginning with the Last Supper, the Biblical inaccuracy as well as the extra characters added into the true story of Christ's Last Supper, the arrest, the trial in the courtyard, etc, felt false and misleading. Very disappointed in this one.

We have 5 boys ages 15,13,12,10 and 5. They all loved this book! Often they would ask to read 2 passages instead of 1 because they were so interested in the story! Love the scripture verses at the end of each passage that help tie it all together. We read Jothams Journey during Christmas and the kids enjoyed that some of the characters carried over to this story. There are 25 short chapters. Was a bit more difficult for us to keep on top of. With Jothams Journey, the story of advent, you read a passage each day. We started this book too early and only needed to read a chapter ever few days so it was wasy to get behind. Next time we read this I will make sure we map it out a littlw better.

It is a good story and does help prepare the heart for the celebration of the Resurrection. I would have liked it to have been more about Jesus and perhaps the perspective of how a young boy (Amon) may have experienced these events in history...the story is more focused on Amon's fictional story than on the story of Jesus itself. Still a good read and I'm sure we'll read it again as a family in the future!

Mr. Ytreeide writes wonderful books. We read all of them to our children (except his latest) He doesn't gloss over how the times were back then. Read first, before reading to very young children. We just took the time to explain some of the harsh conditions before we read. I am looking forward to getting the latest and reading it myself for this Advent. (My children are already grown!) Fabulous to even re-read.

I had this book on my wish list for almost 2 years. I was waiting for my kids to be old enough to sit through this read aloud. Now they are 10, 7, 5 and 3 y.o. and really enjoyed the book. There are many chapters in this book and the story builds as it develops. After each chapter there is a verse and a paragraph to think on. Although I enjoyed this feature, I don't think it was appropriate for my kids age yet. I think we will be reading this book every year and as they get older, I believe I will give them each a copy of this devotional part for them to think on before they go to bed. I advice you to read this book weeks before Easter... we began 2 weeks before Easter and didn't finish until almost 10 days later. I highly recommend this book. There is a lot of historical and cultural information in the book. It would be a great addition to Roman or Ancient History curriculum. We will read this again next year.

This is excerpt from an email I sent to Mr. Tamayo.I just wanted to convey to you that I’m really enjoying your full swing and short game books and having great success. I have always had a pretty good short game which always kept me in the game but your method is nothing short of brilliant. As for “Finally: The Golf Swing’s Simple Secret” my first take away was how it removed so much of the clutter I tend to think about during my golf swing, Secondly, and even more eye opening was being able to create lag in transition into the downswing. I can’t tell you how I have tried to establish lag in my swing with little if any success but with your method for the first time it was clear and executable.I will conclude in saying thanks for writing a couple of fine golf books that I wish I would have come across sooner but very happy I have them now.

These swing ideas have me hitting the ball better than ever. The set-up, shoulder move, and light grip pressure make the swing unconsciously repeatable. Forget about your arms, hands, everything you've been taught to obsess about. I wish I'd had this about $5000.00 ago. That doesn't include time spent. I think anyone who has had some instruction in the basics of the golf swing will improve rapidly in their ball striking. The only time I mess it up is when I start thinking about what I should be doing. Hey, it's just 7-8 bucks. A sleeve of good balls (3) costs than that.

This is a good book for anyone having issues with their game. I think that includes all golfers at some time or another. The keys that I gained were the connection of upper arms with body and simply turning your upper body back and through. Ball flight is straight and distance is good. Not a miracle move, no thought of playing on the Champions senior tour but it straightened out my ailing swing. Worth the read and effort.

I don't know how many golf books I've read, probably 50 or more. I also have watch dozen of golf DVD's and hundreds of internet video's.This is the first book I've read that makes the swing simple and easy to understand. In everything I've read or watched, I've never heard the word "CLUB LAG". It makes total sense to me now. I just finished the book last night and cannot wait to get on the course and try it. I will give an update in a couple weeks.I purchased this book for my Kindle at $4.99 which means it cost less that one drink at the 19th holeUpdateI just played two rounds this week. I'm mid 20's handicap that usually means my score is around 103-105Both rounds, I came in with a 94. The important thing is not the score. It's the first time I can ever remember in all my years of hacking that I was around the green in two on most par fours. My fairway woods were amazing. If I could have chipped and putted good, I could have been in high 80's.My wife read the same book and played with me this week to try out the swing. Her score went up and she played terrible .Go figure. I guess some people adapt and respond to different things.

I have played golf since I was 16 years old, took my first lesson when I was 28 years old, and have played sporadically during this time frame------some of the years I did not play at all. I have taken a total of about 8 lessons in my lifetime. The problem I had and still have is that I don't play much due to time constraints. I average 2 to 3 9-hole rounds per month, playing from June til mid-November. Thus, I could never find that consistency that an individual needs to become better. After reading this book carefully twice and performing most of the exercises recommended, I went to the driving range and immediately noticed that most of my drives were hit straighter......drives ranged from 240 to 290 yards. My distance did not change much but a much greater percentage of my drives went straighter--about 90 percent compared to about 45 to 50 percent prior to reading this book. I felt that I really had more control on my drives and I could hit the ball well much more easily! My distance irons also played much straighter and also longer....a big difference was noted after reading this book! I then played 2. 9 hole rounds of golf and noted that my score decreased by about 5 - 7 strokes on each 9 hole game. This was largely due to more consistency in my game----the one plane golf swing really is simpler and allowed me to play with more consistency with noticeably longer iron play. This led to more confidence and a greater enjoyment of the game. I believe that if a golfer is looking for more consistency and a swing that has a greater chance of being reproducible on drives and iron play, then this book is a must read. The advice offered was more beneficial to me than any lesson I took. Also, if one forgets the advice, all that is needed is a quick review of the book---like having your own personal swing coach. The book is readable in a few hours since it is only 104 pages long.Of note is that the book does not really give much advice for the short game.....it does give a few tips for the short game but most of its focus is for drives and distance iron play. At ant rate, I gave the book 5 stars for its ease of readability, solid advice and clear explanations. It is great for the weekend warrior who can't play 3-6 times per week but wants to improve their swing and have a greater enjoyment of the game!

I wish they had it kindle version. Not a lot of theory. There is no relational calculus at all just relation algebra. It is a keeper type of book.

This helped a lot getting me started with SQL. Also great that it included sample code for using Java as your application builder. Overall good book.

The content is the same as the original version the only difference are the questions at the end of each chapter which is a plus. Great to use with a study group.The print is very small and fine. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

The fact that they are cost-effective, benign to the neighbors, and can even help a mentally ill person permanently ease out of the system should convince anyone more group homes for the mentally ill should exist. Let's hope this is the new paradigm for the mentally ill in the 21st century.

I bought this book as required text for one of my classes and ended up loving it. The stories are amazing and the writing is really good.

I enjoyed this book very much. The author does a good job of highlighting the strengths of people battling mental illness as well as the challeges they face. He gives examples of many people with different mental illnesses and how workers of the group home respond to their individual needs. The book was an easy read and I could not put it down.

I actually bought this copy because I had given away my previous one and couldn't imagine my bookshelf without it. Fabulous book, and the seller was prompt, with the copy as described.

This book tells us what really goes on inside group homes. It also tells us about the parochial neighbors who fight the placement of group homes in their neighborhoods because if irrational fears and ignorance.The author lived in the group home at 9 Highland Road on Long Island, a wealthy community that did not want the house located there and disgraced themselves in the eyes of many readers by raising hell at public meetings.The people living at this home did not destroy the community or devalue neighborhood homes. They also tested the patients of the staff. Winerip does a good job explaining the psychiatric problems experienced by each resident and how staff dealt with the daily travails of that environment. The staff are heroes for doing this work for low pay.The scariest part of the story is Julie, a resident suffering great trauma from childhood horrors and has many personalities to cope with that trauma. One personality takes over the body and when another personality pops out it may not even know where Julie is or how she got there. Apparently, one personality had a social life in New York City doing God knows what. When another personality pops out "she" realizes that the prior personality knows these companions well. But the second personality finds herself trying to converse with people who think they know her, but she doesn't know them. Most of the second half of the book deals with things like this. Scary stuff.

This is one of the most heartwarming, uplifting books I have ever read about mental illness. Mr. Winerip clearly cares about his housemates and has created a loving alternative to a hospital or standard halfway house. He has literally built a community for the people at 9 Highland Road and has provided a gentle voice of encouragement to the residents. His approach is very humane and it comes as no surprise that the people at 9 Highland Road flourish and blossom towards health. To his credit, Mr. Winerip makes no promises. He appears to take the approach of joy in each day with the people who share his vision.

Weinberg distills the essence from von Bertalanffy's classic and manages to present it in a very accessible fashion. The book has been out of print for quite a while so it is great to see a new edition. The message and information contained in here, although originally published in 1975, is now more relevant than ever.Weinberg covers many aspects of systems theory beginning with the main stumbling block with the present scientific paradigm: the idea that the universe is mechanistic. His treatment is much more general than Robert Rosen's in "Life Itself" but still conveys why the mechanistic notion is flawed.He then outlines the general systems theory approach before leading into the idea that a system is simply a way of looking at the world. He then outlines the principle of indifference. This leads straight into two sections outlining various aspects of making observations. Finally he discusses behaviour and then some general systems questions.Throughout the book he uses many examples from disparate fields in conjunction with questions for further research. It is great to see someone who doesn't preach systems but actually uses the ideas.Definitely a must-read as we decided how to solve the myriad of issues before us.

I've spent most of my life wondering why I am drawn to chemists, computer scientists and the law. Although Weinberg doesn't necessarily explain the first part of my quandary, he does give significant insight into what the three listed items have in common. The answer is that they all relate to systems. I believe that most people are exposed to systems thinking intermediate and advanced math classes in high-school and college, but I don't believe that we ever that we are ever taught how to use those models and apply them in a practical way to real-world problems. Weinberg presents a mode of thinking to do just this: see the world, even our day-to-day, in a way that lends itself to rational, systematic analysis and decision-making. In order to do this he has to find a way to merge the creative and logical thought processes. I think he pulls it off extremely well in this book.

"Systems thinking" is a straight forward concept that concerns an understanding of a system by examining the linkages and interactions between the elements that compose the entirety of the system. The reader looking to this book for an exposition of this concept and perhaps examples of its application will be very disappointed.The operative word in the title of this book is "Introduction." What Weinberg provides is not a discussion of systems thinking as such, but an elegant and well thought out set of proofs that demonstrate why systems thinking actually works and provide the foundation of an underlying theory of systems thinking. This is quite different from most of the literature on systems analysis and systems research, but this book provides a foundation for both of these disciplines. As such it has a unique place in the literature of this subject.

This book I bought more than 5 years ago after I recognized that systems approach was needed for memory dump analysis. However, I read it only recently while preparing to talk on systemic software diagnostics. While reading I realized that I already applied some systems theory ideas, for example, about isomorphism of disciplines as systems (which I named as metaphorical bijection): from literary narratology to software narratology and from that to network trace analysis. So if you are interested in systems either computer software ones or human organizational then I would greatly recommend this book as an introduction. The recommended literature in exercises is also useful.

Gerald Weinberg book "An Introduction to General Systems Thinking" is one of the best books I ever read. When I started to think about system theory in the early 70s when my English was too weak to read English books I had only access to several translated books including of course authors like John von Neumann and Ross Ashby and alike. Now I'm doing research on service systems and discovered Weinberg's wonderful book. It's not only a book for experts in the field it is also a book for people who are interested in thinking. It offers a lot of great insights which are easy to understand but also challenge classical ontological thinking. For example it makes clear that a system is a set of entities which "we sat down". It's not pregiven. It is the way off looking at the world. It also makes clear that if science reduces the observable reality there always is another perspective to reduce it which is condensed in the generalized law of complimentary. The content of the book is too rich to be summarized in this short review each chapter is a gold mine but you have to dig.In addition the book is not only something to read but it is something to work with. After each chapter it contains wonderful exercises and challenging questions. Everybody can train his thinking abilities which I think is very important for learning society. I definitely recommend this book to everybody who wants to improve her or his thinking. Who ever goes to university should, from my perspective, read this book. This book is also an entertaining one as it offers nice surprises in the way we usually think. I am very thankful to Gerald Weinberg that I had the opportunity to read his wonderful book.

Read and read again. Foundational to every 'smart guy' are these concepts. This will teach you how to be more analytical, and will demonstrate the ways in which you already are.
