Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus by Sherry Weddell is the most important book I've read this year. That is not exaggeration or hyperbole, but a testament to the research, experience, and insight Weddell brings to the question of evangelization and catechesis in the Church today. Weddell's book is a synthesis of every deep conversation about catechesis and evangelization I've had with my local and national colleagues for the past four years.Weddell begins with a review of the data that should be familiar to all of us: decreasing Mass attendance, Catholics leaving the Church for Protestant communities, and a general "disengagement" from the life of the parish by many of the faithful. But she doesn't just leave us with cold, hard facts. Thanks to her work with parishes across the country Weddell is also able to weave compelling anecdotes that put a human face on the crisis. Most surprising to me were the number of people who have left the Catholic Church not because they were failing to moving closer to Christ but because, as they more fully embraced their call to discipleship, they had no one in their parishes to support them or who understood the sudden fire that had been lit in them. That the Church is losing both unengaged and highly motivated members -- leaking from both ends, as it were -- should alarm all of us.Weddell's overarching question in reviewing the data and stories is this: How many of our parishioners are truly disciples of Jesus Christ? How many are committed to living a life of faith in an intentional way? Her answer, based on conversations with pastors and parish staff across the country, is that about 5% of Catholics can be described as "intentional disciples." This is shockingly low. And unfortunately many of the leaders in our parishes are not included in that figure. Some of the most heartbreaking stories in the book are the anonymous parish leaders -- presumably DREs, youth ministers, and pastoral council members -- who describe themselves as having no active relationship with God.Thankfully Weddell doesn't tread old arguments by trying to place the blame for this crisis on any particular group within the Church. Rather, she identifies as a major contributing factor the lack of a "normal" understanding of what it means to be a disciple:"As we listened to the spiritual experiences of tens of thousands of Catholics, we began to grasp that many, if not a majority of, Catholics don't know what 'normal' Christianity looks like. I believe that one reason for this is the selective silence about the call to discipleship that pervades many parishes. Catholics have come to regard it as normal and deeply Catholic to not talk about the first journey - their relationship with God - except in confession or spiritual direction. This attitude is so pervasive in Catholic communities that we have started to call it the culture of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"Weddell also decries the poor sacramental preparation received by both children and candidates in the RCIA. Weddell delves into the Church's theology of grace to demonstrate that we are not preparing people to fruitfully receive the sacraments. A tendency to focus on the validity of the sacraments has blinded us to the need for the recipients to receive the grace and allow it to flourish in their lives. Quoting St. Thomas Aquinas and the Catechism of the Catholic Church Weddell skillfully indicates catechists who operate with a "the sacrament will take care of it" attitude towards the spiritual lives of those in their care.Weddell goes on to offer a framework for understanding the process by which a person becomes an authentic disciple of Jesus Christ. This was, for me, the most important part of the book, since it is the pivot on which evangelization and catechesis turn. Through her work with the Catherine of Siena Institute Weddell has identified these "thresholds" on the path to discipleship:1. Trust2. Curiosity3. Openness4. Seeking5. Intentional DiscipleshipEach describes the foundational attitude the individual must have before they are able to progress through the stage. Of course, this framework would be of little use without suggestions for how to guide individuals through this journey of faith. Fortunately, Weddell gives us some very concrete ways that we can walk with people at these different stages. Weddell challenges Church leaders to break the silence in our parishes concerning discipleship:"Until discipleship and conversion become a normative part of parish life, many [people] will walk in and out of our parishes untouched, and many Catholics who are disciples will continue to feel that they need to hide or minimize their newly awakened personal faith in front of other Catholics. The first thing that must be done is to deliberately and persistently break the code of silence if it is in place. The Catholic norm of silence about a relationship with God, about Jesus Christ and his story, about our own stories of following Christ, and about the need for everyone to decide whether or not he or she will follow as a disciple is stifling the emergence of a culture of discipleship and all that flows from it. One of the most powerful ways to challenge the silence is by making a safe place for others to talk about their own lived relationship with God."Weddell offers similar advice for each of the thresholds of discipleship; parish staffs would do well to read these chapters carefully and discuss how the suggestions might be implemented in their local communities.Forming Intentional Disciples is a book that has appeared at precisely the moment it is needed in the life of the Church. I am indebted to Sherry Weddell for her work in writing it, and I believe every bishop, pastor, evangelist, and catechetical leader should have a copy and study it carefully. I know I will be.

Weddell does an excellent job of providing insight into Catholic discipleship. She provides facts and figures in the beginning of the book and the provides more in-depth insight into helping Catholics rediscover the reason for being a Catholic Christian--mainly Christ. Weddell sees a real need for Catholics to do more than just go to Mass on Sunday and encourages all Catholics to discover what talents and gifts that they may have to offer. She provides practical insight for helping Catholics to deepen their relationship with Christ within the Church herself. She does a wonderful job of causing the reader to reflect on their own experience of faith.While she is somewhat biased toward the group which she helped to co-found, The Catherine of Sienna Institute, she provides plenty of insight for everyday Catholics and parish professionals to use in the development of their own faith life. She also questions some of the fundamental assumptions that we Catholics often have when approaching the faith.For example when discussing the current catechetical paradigm adopted by many Catholic education programs, she posits that we assume "that a baptized child will pick up the Catholic faith from the family and the parish as naturally and inevitably as he or she learns language and culture" (p. 68). We seem to assume that the personal relationship with Christ will come from the reception of the sacraments and from learning doctrine and facts about Catholicism; which certainly worked in the past because faith was more deeply ingrained in the day to day activities of a normal Catholic individual. This paradigm no longer works, which has resulted more than half of Catholics who leave the Church citing the lack of a personal relationship or encounter with Christ.I would recommend this book for people serious about rediscovering their own faith and as a means to assist Catholics in evangelizing others within and outside of the Church. Catholics have been encouraged from numerous popes and church councils to evangelize, but many are left wondering what this actually means--Weddell has helped to fill this gap between theory and praxis through the publication of this book.

I really enjoyed these three sexy shorts about women who appear to have everything...except love. But they're tired of waiting, tired of just surviving, and tired of running - and decide to flip the script, make some bold moves and go after what they want.As always, this author delivers an excellent balance of character development, plot development and steamy bedroom scenes (oh, and cannot forget the elevator "ride!") that do not override or detract from each other. (I liked how the women could be the aggressor in the bedroom, but that elevator was like Kryptonite to them! LOL!)There's an undeniable chemistry between all three couples, but for me, Willow and Lincoln own this book! Their spontaneity and sexy banter was fun to watch, and some of the things that came out of Willow's mouth were just plain hilarious! Lincoln's everyman quality made him likeable and sexy. I could definitely read a rom-com starring these two!Not hard to believe that these three couples could be one big happy family, and also the best of friends. (I think Nashira could use a couple of true sistadivagyrlfriendz!) But come what may - these three young ladies will keep their men on their toes!

Although this book was very well written, it was just okay for me. I don't like prostitution, blackmail or roofies. This book had all three and left me feeling some type of way. I normally enjoy this Author's work and will definitely be supporting future works.

Oh my, these three stories were packing serious heat! I liked the dynamics of each story but story #2 (Eden and Braxton) was my favorite. I like any story in which the woman goes for hers and is not in her head about why it won't work why she is not worthy, and is running away. I loved the chemistry and backstory to each story/characters. The only regret is that there was not more--each of three stories literally left you wanting more. Now, that's what I call a satisfying shorty story/stories!! Great job, Christina! She is my circle of fav authors and she has yet to disappoint!

Three short stories, with completely different themes that all mesh together, yep, this was fun. Sexy as hell too, page after page. Even thinking I might not care too much for the second story, by the time it was done I enjoyed them just as much as the first and third couple. This author really is fantastic and she makes her characters so sexy without you feeling "typical beautiful guy and girl" type matchup. Everyone is deserving and it makes the stories that much more fun. Sexy, sexy, sexy!

Smokey, sensual shorts filled with substance. I want to say which couple/character/hero is my favorite, but it's difficult to choose considering how well-developed they all are. Psssssst... I will say, I would love to hear more from that Willow.The genius in CCJ is you never know what she's coming with. She takes us on so many journeys that include several genres, but she never loses us. Her creativity is THAT amazing!Bravo, Jones!

I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. I usually don't read short stories but this was so worth it. I have only read one book by this Author and honestly this book and the writing style is very refreshing. I loved it, I loved the story lines and the sex scenes were HOT. I really hope she develops these characters even more. This was a good read...LOVED IT!

Bought this for my mom and she absolutely loved it --- she's now reading it over again. Of course, she is crazy about figs and nature in general.

If you are a gardener, botanist, or just interested in nature, I can recommend this to you. It is not a dry text book. The author writes well and explains the figs place in history and religion with personal anecdotes and stories that are interesting and educational. When I bought it, i wasn't sure about it (a book about figs?), but I can recommend it. It was really quite enjoyable and a fast read.

I read this after hearing an interview with the author on NPR . It is a book I would not have likely stumbled upon otherwise. Beautifully written, and very educational.

Fascinating - I loved it and purchased another copy for friends. Read a notice a few years ago that you were working on this book and have been looking forward to it. Congratulations!

This is totally different from Matt's running science books. This is an introspective and touching examination of his life with running and with his wife. It is a great read for endurance sport book fans and earns it's ranking for #1 book right now on bipolar disorders. Not what I expected but strongly recommended.

This is a memoir from a very well known running writer, and it’s quite a bit different from his rather technical books. It starts out focused on his running, in high school and college days, with looks into his social life at that time, as well. There are lots of details on his runs and on his social life, but not much that is inward-looking, philosophizing, or feeling. He backed off from early pressure from coaches, and felt poorly about himself because of that. To me, it felt like listing to his story over beer and pizza. Depending on how you click with Fitzgeralds’s personality, this may appeal to you more than it did to me.Fitzgerald’s social life comes to focus on Nataki, who becomes his wife. As his personal life becomes more complicated, in part due to Nataki’s bipolar disorder, he pours himself into running. To me, this memoir comes across as a look at how someone who isn’t particularly introspective handles the life by throwing himself deeply into physical activity. But, I can’t claim to really know what is going on in Fitzgerald’s mind, just how it looks to me.As far as I could tell, Fitzgerald doesn’t find much joy in his running; it seems to be more about forgetting his troubles and proving his grit.I’m giving this 3 stars as that as how I think a fair number of people similar to me, would rate this book, as well, and I want to let them know my perspective on the book. Those who are more similar to Fitzgerald in personality would likely enjoy this “memoir over beer and pizza” much more, and for them it would probably rate a 4 or 5. I do love quite a few of Fitzgerald’s books on running and nutrition.But that’s JustMe.

I really enjoyed this author's writing style and story line. If you're looking for a mechanical running book, this isn't it - but it's a wonderful human interest story that includes running. While the ending is up beat and positive, this isn't a feel good, smarmy book - it's the down-to-earth story of a real relationship with big challenges and problems, and how the author really feels about those problems. No sugar coating here - if you're looking for a feel good read, this might not be it - but the author loves his partner and is learning to love himself, and that makes the story accessible and interesting.Mechanically, the author is an able story teller, and I finished this up in just a couple of days. I wanted to know what was next for the author, and that kept me coming back for the next marathon.Good read, worth reading.

It turns out that the reason for the author’s commitment to this endeavor is because his wife Nataki is a sufferer of Bipolar Disorder.A significant part of my interest in this exceptional memoir – besides the fact that it IS a memoir, my current genre of choice – is that distance running is a passion of two of my granddaughters, both of whom have participated in several marathons and one of whom actually just completed an amazing and challenging 55-mile ultra-marathon in the fantastic canyon country of AZ-UT. I hope to share this book with them and other members of my family who have an interest in this endurance sport.Fitzgerald contends that every race is different, and dwells upon the significance of the "community" and spirit of altruism that develops among contestants. His story is filled with vivid, humorous, and in some cases harrowing descriptions of the actual race conditions, mishaps, and adventures. This book is very authentic, but also lots of fun!

Because many ideas are touched upon in a single paragraph (or sentence or phrase) it might be a bit overwhelming for a complete novice, but this is a book one could reread every few years and find something newly insightful.

If you're not familiar with the parameters of risk, Professor Fischhoff and Mr. Kadvany provide a thorough and accessible explanation of the topic. If I tried to summarize the book, I'd say that first you have to determine what you value (what's bad and what's not); next, you must have a way to measure events (how many bad outcomes and good outcomes can one identify); and lastly, you must have some analytical framework to review the events (try to identify the causes of the outcomes and separate causation from correlation or randomness). Principally, one's focus will be on bad outcomes. Statistics are a common tool in this area.The authors look at a wide range of events - various illnesses, premature births, nuclear energy, and many others. As the authors move through the books, the complexity of risk becomes more apparent.Risk perception arises from the values that society or individuals hold. The book will address circumstances where this has occurred.I had one very small observation about one study during WWII of the German bombing of London. The study purported to show that the German bombs were falling randomly on London and therefore there was no real way to decide how to seek shelter. I do not challenge the finding of the study that the German bombs were falling randomly on London, but I do strongly believe that the bombs were falling on London, and not, say, on Edinburgh. Thus, the fact that the bombs were falling on London was not random. If one wished to avoid the bombs, get out of London. If this minor observation did nothing else, it convinced me that the authors were forcing me to think about risk.I think the authors will cause you to think about risk as well. If the topic interests you, you would do well to read the book.

For example, if we rely on the flow of information we simply happen to receive, we over-estimate our vulnerability to violent crime, natural disasters, traffic accidents, and the like. Our information flow isn't designed as an unbiased source for risk assessment.The authors have made careers of understanding risk. The most interesting point they make, I think, is that "societies reveal themselves by how they handle dangers." How we measure risks, including what it is that we consider risks to be risks to reveal, in action, what we value, what really matters to us. Is it life, simply put? Is it a life of a particular kind? Is it long life? Is it healthy life?"Very short introductions" are not for professionals -- they are for the majority of us who can benefit from an explicit, reflective framework for something we don't really have an informed way of thinking about.
