I thank Dr Ngozi Iweala for this bold feat in delivering an insider account of the Nigeria project. I have always known that there was something right with the Jonathanian government that most Nigerians didn't know about. This exposé has dissolved that uncertainty.Every Nigerian need to read this book. I recommend it for every school as a necessary reference in social studies.The proliferation in the new media has given rise to a new wave of information dissemination such that a lot of lies and half truth become easier to peddle. Those who will read this book will learn to filter better what information is making the rounds. Anything short of such censorship will cause many to fall victim to miscues from political propagandists.I have been enlightened and I look forward to starting a campaign with this book as a study material for educational development that will lead to exposure of corruption and the need to institutionalize the structures of society for the the common good.Once again, thanks to Dr Ng.

The author demonstrated deep sense of understanding of Nigeria economy both from Micro and macro economic point of view. This I think was aided by perivious experience gathered while working on other growth and development assignment in the past. I also noticed practical expression of unequal level of patriotism which made her to continue her fight against corruption amidst obvious threat to her life and that of her family and friends. It take high powered brave integrity to soldier on in the type of environment the author express in this book. In all, reading this book has helped empowered me morally and academically to carry on with a similar assignment I was assigned to undertake somewhere even though at smaller scale. The author deserves an accolades.

Generally good book that gives you insight into the political plays in Nigeria. However, it is one-sided. I would have liked the author to talk about the policies they made (in the Finance Ministry) that did not go well rather than only the ones she felt were good.

While this is a personal account of one of the most controversial players in Nigeria’s history, it is quite informative. It gives a lot of insight on some of the administration’s questionable policies and decisions as well as the complex socio-economic dynamics of Nigeria. These insights along with some of her recommendations for fighting corruption should be of interest to young Africans who want to make a difference.

I couldn’t stop reading this book. It’s an expose of the crop of politicians we have in the continent of Africa and why our current situation is such a sad state.

This is an exemplary firsthand treatise on anticorruption reform. I hope more government leaders will follow suit.Though te work displayed fastidious loyalty to the author's principal when it came to laying the blame for the failure of some the anticorruption initiatives, this book will help truth seekers to form a balanced view of actual happenings during the period covered.

I give it 5 star because the book is quite revealing. Although one could tell that a lot was left unsaid perhaps for security reasons, but the narration could still give you an idea of the what behind behind the headlines.

I was crying three minutes in to the book, and cried several more times while reading this book on two long flights.I picked up this book because I was familiar with Caroline's chickadee research. The book was about so much more. I feel like books come in to your life when you really need them and that was the case with this one for me. I couldn't put it down.

I have loved wilderness adventure stories since I was a kid reading (and rereading) Caddie Woodlawn and My Side of the Mountain; The Sun Is a Compass is a fantastic addition to the genre. I would never dream of trekking 4,000 miles, as Van Hemert and her husband did, from the Pacific Northwest to the Alaskan Arctic, but reading about how --and why! -- they did is totally gripping. From the details of the food they packed (Snickers, Crisco, and ramen noodles all figure prominently in their meals) to the people they met and animals they encountered along the way (an aggressive bear, a flock of trumpeter swans, an enormous herd of migrating caribou) -- I could not put this down. It's beautifully written, carefully observed, and an amazing testament to endurance in the face of rough weather, hunger, and marital irritations.

I received an advance copy of the book. I don't usually finish books I'm asked to write about. I opened this one because Caroline Van Hemert is an authority on chickadees (specifically, the problem in Alaska of so many chickadees having badly deformed bills). So I started the book, and although she wrote very little about chickadees, I could not put the book down.In 2012, Van Hemert and her husband journeyed from Bellingham, Washington up the Inside Passage via rowboats he had built, and then on to the Arctic Ocean and through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on foot, skis, and pack rafts, with a couple of opportunities to use canoes for stretches--they did the entire 4,000 mile journey on their own power. They carried their supplies, beforehand setting up a few boxes to ship to themselves via the USPS to small communities along the way.I was fully drawn into the hardships they endured, the splendid beauty they witnessed, and the thrilling wildlife they encountered, from scary bear stories (they decided ahead of time that lugging a gun would be more weight than it was worth) to touching encounters with baby hawks that they could not rescue and goslings that they could. Imagine being within an arm's length of a caribou herd, or quietly watching wolves move along their path below.Whether you love stories about birds and other wildlife, the Alaskan wilderness, epic journeys involving mountain climbing and negotiating treacherous waters in small, hand-powered craft, or young love, The Sun Is a Compass is simply splendid.

This book is part love story, part bird biology, part epic continental adventure. It's a rich blend of memoir, science, and lively descriptions of people, places, and feelings across seascapes and landscapes from Washington State to Northwestern Alaska.It's about a young couple and their life-changing journey that carries them self-propelled by row-boat, ski, foot, packraft, and canoe across northwestern America. The author, Caroline Van Hemert, is an Alaska-born and raised PhD scientist. Her husband, Pat Farrell, is an Alaskan "man's man" who can build anything from spruce bark canoe in the wilderness to custom homes in Anchorage. The two fell in love with each other in wilderness and tested themselves on the scale of journey that very few in today's modern world have done.Caroline Van Hemert is equally adept of painting verbal portraits of her family, friends, and husband Pat, as she is at explaining the complicated migratory and physiological ecology of the birds she finds all along the way from Bellingham to Kotzebue.Other adventure books often seem introverted, self-aggrandizing, or faux-modest and I often can't finish reading them. This book is honest, open, and wonderful. There's so much to it, that it's worth reading twice—personally, I liked it better the second time.

I always like this type of story because the characters always learn something valuable about themselves. It's a great story. I enjoyed it. Caroline and her husband Pat take an unimaginable journey from Washington to the Arctic Circle. through places that I am not all that familiar with. I was both impressed and in awe of the pure fortitude to finish what they started. I enjoyed this book, and picked it because I was a huge fan of Wild by Cheryl Strayed.I received an uncorrected advance copy of this book in kind for my honest review. My advice is for the finished copy to include a map, I was able to look up most of the route they took, but a map would be helpful to the reader. Also, the book refers to birds a lot, a chart of the birds would be a nice touch.

Thoroughly enjoy his writing

Not what I expected from a Shelby Foote book. Not bad stories but somewhat scattered

A collection of various authors. It is not a comprehensive study but an interesting presentation. No earth-shattering revelations. Worth the time but probablly not a keeper.

The list of American writers in this compilation is amazing. You will get perspectives of the Civil War from all sides and from characters you normally do not get to read about. This is great literature disguised as Civil War history. I loved this book.

I finished CHICKAMAUGA several days ago. Since then, I've been unable to whip-up enough mental energy to give it either an emphatic thumbs-up or thumbs-down. I guess you could say it's so-so. And writing the review approaches being a chore.Except for the first and last chapters, which I'll get to in a moment, these stories of the Civil War come from the point of view of the common man and woman, whether he or she be either a soldier in battle or a civilian caught up in the collateral damage.The first chapter is the inaugural address of Jefferson Davis at Montgomery, AL on February 18, 1861. The last chapter is Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address of March 4, 1865. The two serve as bookends to what comes in between, but it's hard to care (despite whatever eloquence the two have to offer.)As with most collections of short stories, these run the gamut from better to worse than average, and the two extremes cancel each other to result in my overall lassitude concerning the whole.Perhaps the best chapter is by, no surprise, Mark Twain: "The Private History of A Campaign That Failed" - an account of his time as a civilian irregular in Missouri at the outbreak of the war playing at soldier with a bunch of his buds, and who did more retreating in the face of real and imagined enemies than advancing to the sounds of battle. It incorporates Twain's characteristically wry, self-effacing humor, which, to me, made it the most readable of the lot.Perhaps the least deserving chapter is one by Stephen Vincent Benet: "Fish-Hook Gettysburg", a 25-page free verse summary of the event. There are so many excellent prose accounts of this decisive encounter that my reaction was "why bother?". The battle deserves better treatment.Another good one was the chapter entitled "The Night of Chancellorsville", in which a young prostitute, Nora, and a bevy of co-workers, while aboard a train on its way to Fightin' Joe Hooker's HQ at Chancellorsville, where they'll show the general and his staff a good time, are almost captured by the Confederates during the subsequent Federal rout. The story has an aspect of cleverness, at least. The prospect of capture by the Rebs causes Nora to think:"... the Rebs would capture us and send us down to one of those prisons you hear about where they starve you to death unless you sing Dixie all the time and kiss (un-PC word for Blacks)."One that I found particularly annoying was "The Burning" by Eudora Welty. Here, Southern belles, sisters Theo and Myra, are alone with their slaves on their plantation near Jackson, MS. After a band of Northern soldiers comes through raping and burning, the survivors straggle to tragic ends. At least I think so. Reading the story was like looking at something through a fine gauze mesh; all was slightly out of focus.I consider the late Shelby Foote one of the greatest U.S. Civil War historians; his monumental trilogy on the subject is a must read. Perhaps I was seduced into buying CHICKAMAUGA when I noticed his name listed as the editor. Had I to do it all over again, I wouldn't.

It seems like many writers like to write about the weaknesses in humanity. It is right to acknowledge these in all of us, but not to praise them.

Much of the language was in ancient Hebrew or Aramaic, written by a sect of Judaism that had broken off from the Hellenistic ways of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The remarkable findings reveal a community of Jews who rejected the archaic teachings of the Temple, set up their own calendar, pondered the meaning of time, and wrote down their views of life after death. Author Hershel Shanks reviews a great number of translations and histories of the period, ranging from ancient historians such as Josephus to contemporary scholars such as Emanuel Tov. He does this to get a better feel for the period of Judaism from the rulership of Herod the Great to the destruction of the First Temple by the Roman Empire, and in order to understand the philosophy that influenced the movement of the Essenes--who are generally recognized as the authors of the scrolls from Qumran. Fifty years ago, a shepherd rummaging through caves surrounding the Dead Sea discovered a number of scrolls and scroll fragments that provided a glimpse into Judaism in the years between the takeover of Jerusalem by Pompeii in 64 B.C. and the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple by Rome in A.D. 70. In his engaging new book, Shanks, founder and editor of Biblical Archaeology Review, examines the history and significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Part detective story and part historical narrative, his book reveals the behind-the-scenes race to discover more scrolls that preoccupied both biblical archeologists and Bedouin, as well as the political intrigues between Israeli and American scholars that kept the scrolls from being translated and available to a larger public for more than 40 years. Most important, however, is Shanks's overview of the question of the authorship of the scrolls. The popular scholarly view on this topic is that the Essenes, a Jewish ascetic community, wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls. In _The Mystery and Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls_ biblical historian Hershel Shanks lifts the veil over the Dead Sea Scrolls. Discovered over 50 years ago, the Scrolls have been clouded by academic competition and political intrigue. What these Scrolls say, and more importantly what they mean to early Christianity, Rabbinic Judiaism and the history of the Near East has been hotly debated. Shanks provides historical context to the Scrolls themselves as well as needed background surrounding the academic dissonance of their significance.Part of the controversey surrounding the Scrolls is the time period they were written: early in the first century CE, contemporaneously with the historical Jesus. As Shanks writes, "For those who want to understand the history of Christianity, the scrolls are exciting and enriching. For those who see Christianity and Christian doctrine as something entirely new and unrelated to its Jewish milieu, the scrolls are threatening." This is exacerbated by the fact that many of those who did the earliest work on the Scrolls (and the archaeological site at Qumran) were priests by avocation.In fact, much of the initial scholarship around the Scrolls was downright shady - parts of the Scrolls became the exclusive academic domain of a single scholar who held access to it and lay claim to first publication rights. These "rights" were in turn bequeathed to students upon their retirement or death. Such behaviour is contrary to the spirit of scholarship not to mention ethically questionable. Fortunately the monopoly on the Scrolls was broken in the late 1970's and early 1980's with the publication of photographs of the Scrolls from when they were first discovered.The question of who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls is given considerable attention by Shanks who, to his credit, presents a variety of historical interpretations in answering this. Similarly the historical meaning of the Scrolls is detailed. The similarities between Christian stories of Jesus and the dogma of the writers is striking, although maddeningly elusive in providing a definitive answer of whether one is directly related to the other. Shanks argues convincingly that in the time of Jesus, there were many versions of Judiasm; only two survived the Roman destruction of the Temple: what would become Christianity and what would become Rabbinic Judaism.I found Shanks easy to read and authoritaritive on the time period as well as on the scholarship. For those interested in the history of the early Church in general, or the Dead Sea Scrolls specifically, this would be the place to begin.

Herschel Shanks and his publications, primarily Biblical Archaeology Review, are deserving of great credit in the effort to break the small, scholarly monopoly on access to the Dead Sea Scrolls. To this end, Shanks has collected in a few volumes key articles and essays on the Scrolls from leading interpreters (including occasionally one or more of the original enclave of scholars who fought so hard to maintain strict control on access to the majority of the scrolls).Shanks was one of the first to dare to break the stranglehold by publishing previously unpublished scroll fragments; by pulling his finger out of the dike, others also began to publish and reconstruct texts, so that eventually there was no point to maintaining a rigid control on access, both for research and for publication.This story is one of great interest of itself, and shortly I shall be reviewing books which talk in greater detail of the intrigue behind the Scrolls. The current volume under review, however, takes us in a different direction.This volume, `The Mystery and Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls', concentrates primarily on context (both religious and historical), meaning and implications of the Scrolls.Among the Scrolls were biblical texts (some of which differ slightly, others radically from the biblical texts which have come down to us today), accounting scrolls, commentaries, calendars, and, perhaps the most mysterious and 'juicy', apocalyptic texts, with characters flamboyant even by current celebrity standards, the Teacher of Righteousness and the Wicked Priest.The first few chapters do talk about the Scroll history, including some of the intrigues. However, the bulk of the book examines theories about the proto-Christian and Essene teachings found in the scrolls (and whether or not these labels are even appropriate to apply to the scrolls), illumination on Judaism, especially the complexity of Judaism to be found in the generation around the destruction of the Temple, and looks forward to future research and meaning from the scrolls.`The scrolls emphasise a hitherto unappreciated variety in Judaism of the late Second Temple period, so much sa that scholars often speak not simply of Judaism, but of Judaisms.'Among the various controversies surrounding the scrolls is the determination of the nature of the location where the scrolls were found. Scroll fans know that the first scrolls were found near Qumran, a desert and deserted building complex near the north shore of the Dead Sea. Was this place a villa, a religious outpost, a trading centre, an ancient travel-lodge, a scriptorium? The latter idea was popularised by Roland de Vaux, one of the original enclave of scholars, and an archaeologist who, being a Roman Catholic priest, was more inclined toward the medieval monastic model with which he was more familiar, than with other interpretations (which have been advanced by others, particularly see Norman Golb), but the popular conception and possibly the plurality if not majority of scholars continue to believe that the Essenes were the inhabitants of Qumran, and that the scrolls (or at least most of them) comprise part of their library. However, Shanks cautions against jumping to premature conclusions.`We must be careful not to read into the ancient sources or the scrolls something that isn't there. For example, neither Josephus nor the scrolls say that Essenes lived in the wilderness. Though they separated themselves from other Jews, they did not necessarily leave Jerusalem or other towns where they lived.'Coupled with the lack of self-identification in the scrolls, the original authorship of them remains in doubt.This is a book accessible to even the most novice of persons interested in the scrolls, and yet provides new detail and insight that will please the veteran scroll follower.

Here is an excellent overview of the history and mystery surrounding the scrolls. In a methodic and easy-to-comprehend manner, Hershel Shanks describes the evolution of scholarly conjecture on several of the individual scrolls and the Qumran community itself. I found the book absolutely tantalizing because of the many key questions about the scrolls that remain unanswered. The author also provided what I consider to be an incisive overview of the impact several of the scrolls have had on Judaism and Christianity during the last four decades. I highly recommend "The Mystery & Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls" to those seeking a broad, layman's understanding of this incredible archeological find, the peculiar trail of the scrolls since their discovery, and the often contradictory religious conclusions the scrolls have provoked.
