The development of that magnificent resource for the mind, the Internet, has put us at a turning point in human history. The development of all the tools of the mind has provided turning points and in making his case Nicholas Carr takes us through what happened to us when we went from clay to papyrus to paper and from tablets to scrolls to books. With every one of these changes the world shifted some. Not as much as now though. At the same time that the Internet is changing the world, bringing us closer together around masses of information, it is changing our ability to think and it is changing our brains in dangerous ways. The issue is not the content of the Internet, but its process. The human adapts to its tools and its tasks. Give a man a hammer for a lifetime’s work and his body shapes to effectively drive nails. Take away his pen and give him a typewriter with a ball and his prose turns from fluid to staccato. (That happened to Nietzsche in the late nineteenth century.) In that process of adaption the brain, since it is not a machine but an organ, changes. These changes can be seen with instruments and their results observed in human behavior. This is the world of Nicholas Carr. I will describe a tiny fraction of what the Internet is doing to our brains.1) The brain, confronted with a glowing screen and the ability to hypertext its way from one interruption to another across the universe of knowledge from what its buddy in Australia thinks of rutabagas, to the spelling of rutabagas to the history of rutabagas to dishes that can be prepared from rutabagas leaves the brain sliding from one fact of surface interest to another fact even less useful, until it occurs to the brain to pursue the prompt on the pop-up menu and check the weather and get off of this slide onto the weather channel where a five minute video on playful seals on San Francisco Bay can be watched for free which does remind the brain that it could slide over to Facebook and find out if anyone “liked” the picture of the family cat posted an hour ago. And many do. Twenty-three “likes,” praise the Lord.Just as the carpenter’s arm grew it muscles to deal effectively with the hammer the brain changes to succeed in a slippy slidey world of itty bitty bits of knowledge intended to interest momentarily and then disappear. So what will happen when it confronts a life choice? Will this passive instrument skidding from meaningless bit to another meaningless bit see itself suddenly as an agent? A “decider?” Or will it in panic seek the next button to push, even if that button bears the label “Self Destruct?”According to Time magazine this is happening now in the Silicon Valley high schools; kids depressed and without a sense of agency pushed around by the ripples on the surface of the Internet are choosing to leave life. Rutabagas have lost their interest. Having your cat liked did not fill the hole intended for having yourself loved. And this child is not accustomed to doing things about things. This child does not do. This child is done to. With the same alacrity that he or she pursued the prompt to watch the seals he or she may “decide” it is time to end this.2) I discovered my wife of the last forty-three years with whom I have raised two children and now five grandchildren with much happiness when while sitting on her front lawn, I seriously told her my goals in life. She thought they were so funny she actually rolled over laughing. If I had instituted a computer search what algorithm would have found her an appropriate match? Yet this brain of mine sorted through whatever book-formed channels it had and locked in immediately on her as the “one,” the antidote to the man who takes himself too seriously. The Internet would have provided me many potential companions, each more serious than the last. That is the way it works. It finds my interests and then adds to the pile. If I follow its suggestions I become narrower and narrower, a better candidate to respond to the advertisers, a defined target, and a wealth of possibilities pass me by.3) For something to remain in long-term memory it must spend two hours in short term memory. (There is actually a tiny physical growth that must happen.) But on the trip through rutabaga land, things go in and out too quickly to be grafted on the long-term nodules. Of course it still exists in the computer’s memory. When you know you need it, it can be sought. However the advantage of the human memory is that it coughs up stored information when you need it but do not know you need it. Not only does your intellect call on your memory, but your memory initiates conversations with your intellect. You won’t have that ability any longer. And since your long-term memory is not being used the section of the brain devoted to long-term memory has already begun to shrink.Distant memories of your mother’s tears, your father’s embrace, your sisters admiration and your little brother’s needs will be crowded out of the brain, and I doubt if you will find them in Internet land either.4) There are now residential therapy centers to assist the hooked to unhook from the Internet. The Internet lights up the same section of the brain as does cocaine. Didn’t’ know those grade school kids were getting a buzz? Makes what may be happening to my grandchildren a little less cute and a little less funny.Read The Shallows yourself. What I have written is just a corner of the future described there. See if it scares you! And if it does, see who else you can scare with it. Hope they have enough of an attention span left to read the book. (A sign of the times is that people who used to write books no longer can read them. Not enough slippy and slidey. Boring!)Can the majority of us survive without complex and nuanced thought? Without deep and poignant memories? Do we want to?

I knew something was wrong when I would post online, waiting for anyone to respond. It becomes this obsession, small bits of human contact, mediated by the computer."This person likes what you wrote", digital pats on they back, they become addictive.I am five days clean from reddit.com. I've used drugs, no drug I've tried is as addictive as social media. The first day my entire body hurt. I just wanted to check my posts, refresh the front page. I knew it would be hard, I didn't know it would make me suicidal.I kept having these thoughts about missing out. How would I know the absolute latest information about the Las Vegas shooter? Even with a NYTimes subscription I felt left out.The endless conversations, arguments, quips. It feels like a huge extended family.I get why. It amplifies our conversations to make them seem outsized, but no one is really reading. It's non-stop entertainment. My views were never seriously challenged. Any belief, no matter how strange, a group is waiting to accept you.I want more real life friends and I can tell a reliance on the Internet has stunted my ability to relate to people in the real world.I'm getting over an addiction, now the work of living begins.

I loved reading, thinking, contemplating and attempting to understand complex concepts as a young man and adult. In the last 10 years that joy steadily declined, and I have become in my mind less able to do what I once loved. I thought it was aging, little did I know. If you love learning and thinking read this book. Carr has made a strong case for limiting our interaction with the WWW because it is transforming us into computers, not thinkers.

Lots to think about here for being such a short book.If you're looking at this, just go for it.It's a quick read that shouldn't keep you from your tech for too long. Read it on a Kindle for extra irony. The first half is largely a historical summary of communication and media, with the back half emphasizing the effects on our brains. It was written years ago, so it adds an interesting potency to see the impact today.

I love all of Martina Slajerova's cookbooks, and I think her latest, "Keto All Day," may be her best yet! For those of you new to Martina's culinary creations, her recipes are exclusively keto, whole-food based, easy to follow and prepare, and absolutely delicious. She's truly the queen of keto cooking! "Keto All Day" allows you to plan your meals for the entire day in a way that makes the most sense for you, based on your food preferences and tolerances, as well as what ingredients and cookware you have on hand and the amount of time you can devote to meal prep and cooking. There are more than 100 enticing recipes in this book, including Carrot Cake Oatmeal for breakfast, an absolutely stunning Vegetable Rose Pie for lunch, and Keto Kung Pao Chicken for dinner. There are also several keto-friendly appetizer, dessert, and drink recipes that may very likely become favorites for entertaining. Complete nutritional information accompanies each recipe (very important to me, as a registered dietitian), along with beautiful photography throughout the book. If you're looking for delicious, healthy, easy-to-prepare recipes in a well-organized book, I highly recommend "Keto All Day."

Martina Slajerova is one of my favorite keto cookbook authors. As all her other books have been before it, this one is a home run. If you like very flavorful dishes with different herbs & spices -- things that run the gamut from Greek to Mexican to Middle Eastern to Eastern European, Asian, and beyond, this is a good book to add major flair to your cooking. I would say it's not the best book if you're brand new to keto, though. There's no info on why or how the diet works; it's all recipes, straight-up. (For newbies, start with her first book, The KetoDiet Cookbook.) This book is also probably better for people who enjoy cooking and have a bit of experience doing so. If your cooking skills stop at opening cans and boiling water, this probably isn't the best book for you. But if you *do* like cooking and want to add flair to your keto diet, this is a great buy. And no doubt -- you can easily entertain with these recipes. Your friends & family who don't eat keto won't miss the carbs at all when you bring these rich & satisfying meals to the table. Some of the recipes seem intimidating at first because the ingredient lists are long, but you'll notice it's mostly just different seasonings, so if you enjoy cooking and you keep a well-stocked spice rack and pantry (for canned tomatoes, nut flours, keto-friendly sweeteners, etc.), it's no problem. For anyone who thinks keto is nothing but bunless bacon cheeseburgers and pepperoni, Martina's books will open your eyes to the endless possibilities, whether you prefer red meat, poultry, fish, or vegetables. (Not that there's anything wrong with bunless bacon cheeseburgers!)A great keto cookbook for experienced cooks who want to step things up.

I ordered this book as a pre-order and have been looking forward to it! I just received it in the mail. It's a very nice book on the outside but when I opened it I discovered the contents of the book were bound upside down. Also, the binding is not complete as multiple pages fell out when I opened it and many others are barely hanging on. I do not want to go through the trouble of re-packaging and shipping back and I would like a replacement. The recipes look really good!

Fair Winds Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Keto All Day Cookbook: More Than 100 Low-Carb Recipes That Let You Stay Keto For Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given. This cookbook contains recipes that are designed for a Keto-friendly diet. The page layouts are very attractive and include both photographs and nutritional information, so that readers can get a true picture of the finished dishes. Divided into sections including Basics, Breakfasts, Snacks and Appetizers, Soups and Salads, Lunches, Dinners, Drinks and Desserts, and Extras, The Keto All Day Cookbook is organized in a logical fashion that follows the traditional progression of a meal.Somewhat new to the idea of a Keto diet, I was surprised to learn how involved the recipes can be, often including ingredients that may be unfamiliar to some readers. The Keto diet is one that I would not recommend to readers without the advice of a doctor, but using some of the recipes in this book as occasional meals can help inspire a new way of eating. Not all Keto recipes are high fat and many are nutritionally balanced between fat, protein, and low carbohydrates. The breakfast recipes include too many variations on egg dishes and not enough of anything else. Many of the appetizers and snacks are heavy, laden with creamy butter and eggs. I would like to try the Peri Peri Roasted Nuts (p. 49), as they are nutritionally balanced and a great way to combat those mid-day cravings. In the soup and salad section, Keto variations of Hungarian Goulash (p. 66) and Chicken Caesar Salad with Poached Egg (p. 72) are interesting twists of classic favorites. The low starch lunches are mostly labor intensive, making preparation the day before a key component for success. The recipe that I would most like to make is the Mexican Chicken Bowls (p. 85), as the avocado-feta salsa that makes up the base of the dish is a well seasoned and flavorful backdrop to the marinated chicken. In the high fat dinners section, there are vegetarian dishes as well as meat ones. Broccoli Mushroom Alfredo Casserole (p. 94) will have eaters not missing the meat in this well balanced and tasty dish. Healthy Fish Sticks with Tartar Sauce (p. 97) can be made kid friendly or lunch appropriate as Fish Tacos, with its slaw providing crunch and tartar sauce for its creaminess. Keto Kung Pao Chicken (p. 114) has an explosion of flavor with its marinated chicken and nutritionally sound vegetables. There are some amazing sugar-free drinks and desserts, like Chocolate and Raspberry Truffles (p. 142) and Creamy Dark Hot Chocolate (p. 154). Finally, the author ends the cookbook with sauces and marinades, the perfect accompaniments to many different dishes. Some of the ingredients in this cookbook are expensive and many not be readily available, so that is something that readers should keep in mind when choosing The Keto All Day Cookbook. I found a lot of the main dishes to be intriguing and I look forward to trying some of the recipes, although I am skeptical about making a switch to a Keto lifestyle.

From Library Journal

A "companion" (not catalog) to the much-heralded National Gallery of Art exhibit, "The Treasure Houses of Britain," this richly illustrated volume is both handsome to the eye and intellectually pleasing. It is a grand tour indeed: a room-by-room inspection culled from a variety of residencesfrom Castle Howard in Yorkshire to Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshireof halls, galleries and saloons, dressing rooms, chapels, and stairways. The reader gets a picture (and background architectural and social history) of their place in domestic architecture through the centuries. A gazetteer, glossary, and floor plans complete the picture. The 180 color photos make the diversity of design grandly apparent. Essential for architectural and design collections; public libraries might consider as well. Review

“A remarkable story of resilience and heart, Not Fade Away follows Rebecca Alexander as she must navigate the world cursed with a rare genetic disorder that will one day rob her of both sight and hearing. Bereft of self-pity, funny, and bursting with honesty, Not Fade Away will get its hooks in you. I promise that by the end of her story, you will fall just as in love with Rebecca as I have.”—Susannah Cahalan, New York Times bestselling author of Brain on Fire “Her eyes and ears may be declining, but Rebecca’s sense of self is sharply focused and profoundly tuned. By sharing her life, she has enriched mine and will yours, too. I love this woman.”—Meredith Vieira “There is a saying that goes—you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. Rebecca Alexander’s indomitable spirit spills out on to the pages of this incredible memoir. She will lift you up . . . the way she did for me.”—Hoda Kotb, New York Times bestselling author of Ten Years Later and Hoda, and Emmy-award-winning anchor of the Today show“An honest and eloquent look at life . . . Alexander emphasized the importance of embracing the here and now, of being present and grateful for the gift of life, in whatever shape it might take.”—Kirkus Reviews“Profoundly inspiring . . . [Rebecca’s] ability to find so much to be grateful for after being dealt such an unfair hand challenges those of us with far fewer hardships to treat each day as a gift.”—Publishers Weekly“Wise and realistic instruction in intentional living, grace, and overcoming obstacles great and small.”—Booklist

Having the privilege of knowing author Rebecca, I could write for hours about her perseverance, how inspiring and strong she is and how to me she is essentially a superhero. But none of these things, (as related to her disabilities) define who she is for even a minute, nor do they define this book. What starts as a truly unique couldn't write this sh*t if you tried kind of story, quickly reveals itself to be full of humor, humanity and the universal truths and questions we all face. I felt as if I was sitting across from Rebecca being happily bombarded by her contagious humor and zest for life. Her personality, honesty and relatable experiences jump off each page, prompting the reader to consider not only their own blessings and challenges, but the larger questions about being the best friends, sisters/brothers, lovers and people we can be.We all stand to learn so much from those like Rebecca who are brave enough not only to live life SO large but also to share each moment so honestly with the world. Every anecdote in this book is a reminder of how adaptable, resilient and downright loving we can all choose to be when given the choice. Not a light read to be sure, but as only Rebecca can, this book takes the scariest and loneliest aspects of our lives and creates space for laughter, love and hope. A GREAT read.

I can relate to Rebecca’s dread of getting her vision tests, knowing already what they will say: “your vision has gotten worse again.” From about the age of 5 to 35, I dreaded the eye doctor because I always got the same news: “your vision has gotten worse again, here are thicker glasses and stronger, less bearable, contact lenses for you to endure. Have a nice day!” Even though they never told me I was going blind, I certainly seemed to be in the express lane for it. Because of that, I have always been fascinated by other people’s stories of vision loss or of blind people, I guess because someday I figured I could very well be among them, at the rate I was going.I read this book expecting a story of what it would be like to find out you are going blind and deaf, but what I got was so much more. What I found was not really a story of coping with disabilities, but more a story of living life to the fullest, regardless of your circumstances. Rebecca is funny, intelligent, compassionate, and extremely athletic; accomplishing things already that most fully able-bodied people never even come close to achieving in their lives. I have no doubt, given her strong network of family and friends, and her amazing perspective and perseverance, that she will continue to thrive, no matter what path her eyes and ears decide to go down.Truly a remarkable woman and I thank her for this uplifting read and wish her the very best, if she ever reads this! Highly recommended!

Rebecca Alexander's "Not Fade Away" is a journey that's filled with a full range of emotions from sad and shocking to funny and hopeful. At 19, she received the news that she had Usher Syndrome Type III. It's a rare genetic mutation with profound consequences--loss of sight and sound. But, even at 12, when an ophthalmologist told her parents she would need a guide dog by 20, Rebecca never simply gave in to the diagnosis at hand. Along the journey, we see the familiar life of many teenagers including possibly ourselves. From her parents' divorce to her first romance to moving far away for college, so many events in this young life ring true. And she manages to give us a valuable insight into a world that so few of us understand. As a child, I recall a bizarre conversation that seems more common now than I realized. I was asked if I had to lose one thing, sight or sound, which would it be? Rebecca never had the choice. Yet, she takes the most out of life she can and truly practices the concept of Carpe diem-Seize the day!Above all, Rebecca Alexander's book left me feeling more humble than I could imagine. But, it also left me with such a wonderful feeling of hope. It's a wonderful book to read and share. Of all the books I have read over this past year, Not Fade Away ranks at the top!

Great read, heartwarming and inspirational. Rebecca draws you into her life, her friends, her family and by the time you're done, you feel like you are part of her big, warm, supportive network. I was a little apprehensive starting the book, preparing to read about some very difficult challenges for this young vibrant woman, but instead, I walked away awed and inspired by how Rebecca turns thoughts of pity to admiration for how she has chosen to live life to it's fullest, choosing to celebrate everything she does have rather than what she has lost!

This autobiography is about a truly an unbelievable courageous young woman informing us from her first diagnosis of a genetic disease which will probably result in another Helen Keller! Even though she learns of her disease at a early age, she is going through life, as we speak, continuing to live as a "healthy' professional. I could not put the book down to learn of what was going to transpire next in her life.

Reading Rebecca Alexander's memoir is like listening to a good friend confide what it is like to gradually lose sight and hearing. As she goes through the progression of how her syndrome effects her body and her life, she lets you in on the ups and downs of her journey without pretense. Rebecca's voice is honest, courageous, funny and inspiring. I loved her descriptions of the many physical challenges she decides to take on and how she is able to harness enduring strength, even as other parts of her body are becoming weaker. A joy to read.

I became aware of this book when I was in my teens, finally read it when I was 30. My life would have been better if I had read it sooner. Buy this for your kids, make sure they read it, then make sure they learn the right things from it.As literature, this book is just OK, hence the four stars. Rand was not a native English speaker. That she managed to write this well in a second language is amazing. I would have written this book differently, but I didn't write it. Everything after The Big Long Speech is necessary, I suppose, but kind of sophomoric, definitely a B movie. As science fiction, the book is laughable, but I suggest you cut the author some slack and go with it. As an exposition of important ideas, this book has no equal. If you want to know what's wrong with the world, you can start here. It is important that you not *end* here. Think of this book as a laxative. Once you have ingested this, you can work on restocking your mental gut with better food than our culture has given you.Speaking of speeches, this book has lots of them. I have a friend who says this is her favorite book, but she also says she has never read the speeches. Here's news for you: if you haven't read the speeches, you haven't read the book. Knowing her, I suspect that if she read the speeches, it would no longer be her favorite book. Atlas Shrugged is an assault upon your morals. Some people are surprised to learn that their morals deserved to be assaulted. Some never get over the fact of the assault, assuming the problem lies with the author and her infernal book. No. The problem lies with some very old and pervasive ideas that turn out to be senseless, destructive, murderous, and just plain wrong. Some of us sort of knew that all along, but thought we were the only ones who thought so. It's a relief to see this out in the light of day.I believe the author's strategy is to make you tired. The main character tries way too hard before capitulating, allowing the author to write yet more episodes illustrating the corrupt and coercive muck we wallow in, the stuff you've encountered all your life, perhaps wondering if life really had to be this way. No, it doesn't. The aforementioned Big Long Speech is one of the greatest things ever written. But the author has to soften you up first. Some people read this and get strange. This is probably to be expected after somebody hits the reset button on their morality. It takes a while to figure out what to do next. A few people never recover, becoming something like Jesus Freaks. Most readers eventually resettle their minds, but in a different place than it would have been if they hadn't read this book.Still need a reason to read this book? It will help you say No when No needs to be said. It might even save your life. Really.

I am not against a lengthy book, but a self indulgent 1000 plus page manifesto in which characters give uninterrupted speeches that take four hours to read and serve no purpose other than to preach the author's philosophy is completely unnecessary. The book did clearly demonstrate Ayn Rand's philosophy through the characters of John Galt, Francisco D'anconia, and Ragnar D. I didn't need the sililoquies. I loved the character of Danny Taggart, who is portrayed as a woman ahead of her time considering the era in which this book was written. Can't stand Hank Reardan, who is supposed to be a hero, but is just an arrogant, if intelligent, putz. The writing style was awful...I would really love to know how many times some form of the word "astonish" is used in the book. Rand seems to need to state the most mundane points in both the positive and negative fashion. She would not say "Dagny was happy..." She would say "Dagny was, not sad, but happy. That is to say she was filled with joy, she was joyous. She was not downtrodden, but rather, pleased." This is not a quote from the book, but would have fit right in. Goodness, Ayn, leave it at happy, we all get it. Rand does write some great triumphant moments...especially when her heroes accomplish a monumental task or, pull off a dramatic act of rebellion. These are the moments that push you through the drivel. Examples: the first run of the John Galt line, or when John Galt instructs the clueless politicians in how to repair their torture machine. As for her philosophy...I am not in agreement. The world she portrays in Galt's Gulch would not be the end result of a nation which accepted her primitive , childish, self-centered, arrogant and elitist tenets. Her true society would look like a bunch of four year olds, sitting on top of their toys, crying mine, mine, mine!

"Atlas Shrugged" is a huge sprawling dystopian novel that combines economics, science fiction, philosophy, and intrique. It is the fourth and final novel of Ayn Rand. The novel is written in a modern popular style and is mostly highly readable. Probably the most difficult part of reading this book is its length. The novel seems to me to be particularly timely in regard to the current philosophical debate in American society at this time. The book revolves around the larger issues of private enterprise and entrepreneurship and socialism and government control. Within the larger theme are many subplots including some romantic intrigue. The first novel by Ayn Rand that I read was "Atlas Shrugged". Since then I have read "Anthem", "The Fountainhead", and a second reading of "Atlas Shrugged". "Anthem" and "Atlas Shrugged" are both dystopian novels. I don't wish to risk spoiling the reading experience for a perspective reader. It is clear to me that Ayn Rand conveys her personal philosophy within these works. In "The Fountainhead" she seems to extol her preferred architecture along with a very strange sexual relationship between two individuals. In "Atlas Shrugged" there is yet more unusual romantic relationships between individuals. Having also read a biography about Ayn Rand it is clear that there is a semi autobiographical aspect to those parts of these novels. In summary I am very glad that I had a chance to read and study both "Atlas Shrugged" and the life and works of Ayn Rand. Her novels provide both entertainment and fuel for thought. I doubt that this book will suit the tastes of all readers, but it is highly readable and was well worth the effort to me. Thank You...
