The most exciting chapter in this book is the last where we learn that in 1976 a scientific genius named Richard Dawkins discovered that human beings have this thing called a “brain” and that this brain can generate “ideas” and other things, such as music and pictures. Naturally a new name was required to summarize this revolutionary new discovery so Dawkins called the products of the mind a “meme” and his study one of “memetics.” We then learn that these “ideas” or other memes can take on a life of their own, not because there is anything valuable about them, but just because they are so darned crafty about taking advantage of or febrile brains. For example, we hear over and over again about those annoying “earworms” which can take over our minds when we hear a catchy tune, although not so much about the evil people who create these ear worms, evildoers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Ludwig Beethoven. There is nothing really great about what they produced, they just were oh so tricky about creating such really good “earworms” that all of our gosh darned subsequent minds just can’t help but want to hear over and over, for century after century. To quote this good author: “is music a parasite that evolved to survive in the ecological niche of the human brain? Maybe so.” In short, these “earworms” are just “informational parasites” and thus “music parasitizes the brain.” Up until the last chapter I would have said that this was an interesting book that effectively summarized how evolution impacted human behavior and society, but certainly such daft “insights” as this in the last chapter made me want to re-think that conclusion.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to be introduced or reminded of how the far-reaching modern explanatory power of natural selection, evolutionary psychology, and memetics inform our understanding of ourselves and our culture. More accessible than its small font might imply, more rigorous and meticulously referenced than a superficial overview. Peppered by humor and well chosen quotations, this would be a great book for an intellectually curious young adult looking for a masterful modern summary of how the more narrowly-focused ideas they've learned in the classroom - genetics, evolution, anthropology - inform the vast understanding of human nature and culture.

This book is a very easy read. If you’re a laymen such as I, you’ll have no difficulty grasping the concepts Dr. Stewart-Williams introduces. Evolutionary psychology appears to be the original and science based gender studies. It explains why males and females act the way we do. It is the firewall against the loud post-modern campus cult of grievance studies culture. By incorporating natural observations cross-culturally and across the species, this discipline’s theories are hard to refute on a number of subjects related to what it is to be human. Dr. Stewart-Williams novel way of giving us a bird’s eye view of ourselves is entertaining and his simple language and interesting examples held my attention. I had several “eureka” moments reading this book and I highly recommend it.

This book follows the path charted by Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene" and Robert Wright's "The Moral Animal". The book covers a lot of the same material exploring evolutionary psychology with elaborate examples. Where it primarily differs from the two is in the evolutionary explanation of human behaviors (including differences between the sexes) contrasted with the 'Blank Slate' position taken by by several sociologists - the claim that human behavior including gender differences are purely a function of culture. Stewart-Williams makes a compelling argument for why the 'culture only' theory cannot be a satisfying explanation for many of the most common ubiquitous behaviors and gender differences and where an evolutionary approach is the only reasonable explanation.It's commendable how Stewart-Williams treads on the subject of gender differences - a landmine esp. in the current socio-political environment: he's uncompromising on his passionate advocacy of the evolutionary drivers of differences but balances this with the abundant caution needed to prevent readers from drawing incorrect conclusions and worse, using it as evidence to perpetuate social inequality and nullify hard won gains on that front.The final chapter on Memetics is also new territory (not covered in detail in the other two books), but lacks the readability of the rest of the book.While several reviewers find the "Alien assessment" construct instructive it didn't work for me: I was left bewildered and could not get past the assumption that a super intelligent alien would either not be a product of natural selection itself or unaware of the concept.Overall a worthwhile read - to use an idea from the book, demonstrates sufficient inclusive fitness to survive on my rather small bookshelf at the expense of some other hapless book that will now be donated to the local library.

Considering the complexity of the subject it was beautifully organized. The writer is obviously a very effective teacher, who is not afraid to use humor judiciously sprinkled throughout the book to make his points. .Has many references to other scientists in related fields. I highly recommend this book even though it may be slow going at times, but worth the effort. The best exposition of memetics I've read so far.

I once said in one of my reviews that should I encounter another writer who is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop, I should run in the opposite direction as I have little appreciation for the style that often results - run on or fragmented sentences, lack of or unusual use of punctuation, stream of consciousness nonsense, strangely disjointed stories, etc. As Pat Conroy put it in a recent book, interestingly in an item about Ann Patchett, the school "has produced some great writers and an endless regiment of failed ones." (Note that he applied there but was rejected and "...[I] still consider it one of the great blessings of my writing career.") "But it didn't lay a hand on the strength of Ann Patchett's talent."I tend to agree. I once drove some miles out of my way a couple of years ago to visit Parnassus Books in Nashville. (Exactly 999 miles from my doorstep on the west coast of Florida.) For those that don't know the story, Ann and her commercial partner Karen Hayes opened the store when both Borders and Barnes and Noble pulled out despite having profitable operations, indicating the market was just too small. Well the store has thrived and given my love for independent bookstores I had to grab a few books in addition to the T-shirt. One of the books was this one, a small paperback "limited edition" by Harper Collins. I tossed it in the back of the car with the other paperbacks destined to become a "lunch read" eventually and it was a couple of years before I got to it.My first surprise was opening the book and finding that Ann had signed it! My next surprise was finding out how good it was. Ann writes in linear, descriptive fashion that really flows. Not only is the story worthy, but the characterizations are spot on and I found myself thinking of these folks long after I closed the book.The tale deals with a doctor in Minneapolis working for a drug company and carrying on an affair with the company CEO. Upon reports of the death of her former lab partner who was working in the jungles of Brazil, he asks her to make the trip to inquire as to the circumstances and to see what progress has been made, if any, in the development of some drugs. The descriptions of the jungle, the native inhabitants and the other participants really has to be read to be believed. The twists and turns of the story are fascinating and the ending is amazing.Probably my best novel of the year - fully worthy of 5 stars!

This is the second book I have read by Ann Patchett. (The first was "Commonwealth.") I sense a writer's "trick" in these two that she uses magnificently. In both books, we have perfectly ordinary people living perfectly ordinary lives. And then (insert the golden Plot Key and twist slightly) something happens that is not perfectly ordinary and changes their lives. This happens in the first few pages of the book. And then we share in the experience of these perfectly ordinary people as they deal with something they never imagined--and the implications and effects it has on those they love. And when I say "experience," I mean that. Ann Patchett fully draws the reader into the book. The stories are not scary or filled with terror (remember, the "perfectly ordinary" descriptions above), but the story will haunt you.The basic plot of "State of Wonder": In the first sentence we learn that Dr. Anders Eckman is dead. Anders had traveled deep into the Amazon at the behest of his employer, a Minneapolis-based pharmaceutical company that has a researcher working at a secret site on a secret drug that will revolutionize the world. But the researcher is incommunicado. Anders was sent to investigate. And then tragedy strikes. With few details about his death and no body (he was hastily buried in the jungle), Dr. Marina Singh, Anders's officemate, is sent to the Amazon to find out what happened to this married father of three young boys. And so begins a state of wonder in which the reader will be carried with descriptions so vivid that it's easy to envision the chaos and blistering heat of the jungle and almost hear the squawking birds and screeching creatures that inhabit it. Marina's perfectly ordinary life has been upended and will never be perfectly ordinary again.But the book is so much more than plot--no matter how riveting and engrossing. It is also about people, our connections, the choices we make and the effects those choices have on us and others.

Very well-written book. Both not what I was expecting, and far more than I was expecting.I expected a book about exploring the Amazon. The first half of the book was all about the main character, a doctor and scientist, and her work and personal relationships in Minnesota. By the time she flies to Manaus to look for a lost colleague, one is already half-way through the book.Eventually, the person she is waiting for in Manaus shows up, and she follows them into the jungle. From here, her experiences are so different from what I would have expected, yet interesting and profound. I really enjoyed stepping into this woman's shoes and experiencing everything she experienced. It's like adventure travel, combined with science and moral dilemmas, and calls for bravery in multiple situations. To my surprise, the book winds up with a very satisfying ending.

I loved the writing in this novel. The author is so technically excellent in weaving in flashbacks, memories, dreams and the physical world. I loved the descriptions of the Amazon, an area I will probably never visit but one that came to life in A. Patchett's prose. She took me on the archetypal journey of the protagonist/heroine who strikes out on a search and succeeds in bringing back the Holy Grail (Anders). However, I do think that the author seems to have painted herself into a corner when we get to the end of the book. The author painstakingly takes us on the journey from Marina reluctantly considering beginning her quest to her coming to terms to the society that she has entered to the actions she takes in the end. Nothing prepared me for the sudden and not-quite-believable ending given the totality of the book. Still, there is much to delight in the wonderful prose and the often startling imagery of this novel.

Let me say first off that I agree with much that Kent Beck has to say: 1. Testing should be done along with the coding. 2. Use regression tests to be confident of making changes. 3. In many ways testing can be used as documentation since it is much more definitive than specification documents. 4. Testing should be used to have the client sign off on a product. In reading the book I learned the specifics of how tests are designed in TDD. It seems reasonable and I am going to make a conscious effort at designing my tests in the way suggested.Where I disagree is in the use of the tests to drive software design. In the first part of the book, which I think is the most important part, a very good coding problem is analyzed - it is realistic, limited in scope and far from trivial. I followed along until I reached a point where things stopped making sense. I skipped ahead to see where things were headed and then things became clear.What is being advocated is a type of bottom up design approach. This may work for some. It may even be that the book faithfully reproduced Beck's reasoning process. It does not work for me. I first have to see the larger picture, what he refers to as the "metaphor." The whole thing would have been much clearer to me if at the beginning I was told that one approach to summing money in different currencies would be to use an array to store the information but that instead the implementation would create a list similar to how things are done in LISP.I urge the reader to judge for him/herself. Like I said this is a good example to go through. I even learned some things about more advanced uses of object oriented programming. As for software design I am going to stick with dataflow diagrams. They are still the best tool that I know of for putting together software, UML notwithstanding.

Kent Beck is one of my favorite authors. Learning and becoming proficient at TDD requires a shift in how software development is approached. Lots of people who have been doing TDD for quite a while make it seem like a trivial task to utilize, but for beginners who wonder how in the heck you start with a test it's not so easy. This book goes a long way to providing real world examples as well as demonstrates how to utilize TDD and will help anyone looking to wrap their brain around the TDD approach of software development.

While the first two parts of the book: "The Money Example" and "The xUnit Example" may seem discontenting for an experienced XP'er, the third part: "Patterns for Test-Driven Development" is amazingly impressive. It brings lot of valuable patterns: Test-Driven Development Patterns, Red Bar Patterns, Testing Patterns, Green Bar Patterns, xUnit Patterns and Design Patterns. Despite the book "Design Patterns" seems to be provisioning, design in test-driven-development requires a slightly different look at design patterns, and Kent Beck has done his best in providing not only the common vocabulary, but a gainful technique not known to be described anywhere else before.Before the publication of this book, there was a lack of a good manual for xUnit testing framework. The title "Testing Extreme Programming" by Lisa Crispin and Tip House, released a couple of month before this book, didn't fill the gap. This book is the first significant guidebook for xUnit ever released. While the work "Extreme Programming Installed" exposes most valuable testing experience among other XP titles, it didn't focus on xUnit as well.I would recommend "Design Pattern" and "Refactoring" in addition to this book, assuming that you are aware of the XP manifesto: "Extreme Programming Explained".

This is book is a necessary read for anyone who wants to ensure changes/bugfixes don't break what ain't broken. Well written and concepts clearly demonstrated. Overall it is a great read that will help you write understandable, extensible and maintainable code.

This is the most helpful book I've read so far on getting you familiar with testing. You get walked through creating a currency model using TDD and then walk through creating your own TDD framework using TDD so that you never have to be without it.

Mr Beck is my hero. This book is short and focused. It presents a pretty simple and seemingly silly process of writing the tests before the code that implements it. The way he does it is where the magic is. Its simple, humorous, and surprisingly humble. He presents a few simple but non trivial coding problems and the TDD process which leads to the solution. His humility is so strong its hard to believe he's the master craftsman that he is. I think any serious software developer that hasn't read this book and spent time with this approach is missing out. I considered myself a great developer before I read this book and it changed everything for me. Maybe I wasn't a great developer or maybe I got even better, hard to say. I recommend it 100%

Children of the '80s, you're going to love this book! If you're like me, middle-aged, with fond memories of playing video games on the classic Atari 2600 console, you are going to love perusing Tim Lapetino's beautiful coffee-table book Art of Atari. This book is a nostalgia trip that took me back to some long, lazy days in front of the TV playing video games.This large, colorful volume includes sections on the history of Atari, console games, industrial design, and some of the little-known and never-released concepts Atari produced. But the meat of the book, about 3/4 of the content, is the art work of the many Atari games. As Ernest Cline points out in the Foreward, "Even though the crude graphics of the games themselves were never quite as colorful or realistic as the illustrations depicted, that artwork had an almost magical way of elevating your gameplay experience, by helping your imagination bridge the gap between the crude pixelated shapes dancing across your TV screen and the fantastic images they could conjure in your mind's eye."To say the actual games did not measure up to the fanciful box cover art is an understatement. I looked through the book with my 15-year-old son, who has grown up with Wii and PS3. He was roaring with laughter at the screen images of the games. And it's true; the graphics were truly horrid. Art of Atari is a great reminder that even a game with terrible graphics and a simple one-button joystick can be loads of fun.But the real focus of Art of Atari is the art and the artists. Lapetino presents page after page of box cover art, accompanying art, concept art, promotional art, and preliminary designs, interspersed with profiles and quotes from the artists. Reading about their work and anecdotes about the industry is fun and insightful. It would have been interested to see more examples of the in-game art. Granted, the crude illustrations may best be forgotten; perhaps Lapetino was right only to include a small screen shot of each game.Even the most ardent Atari fan will see games and other products in Art of Atari that he or she has never seen or has long forgotten about. Any Atari fan will be longing to dig out the old 2600 and play some games after spending some time with this book. I enjoyed seeing all this art and history compiled in one place.Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the complimentary electronic review copy!

This book deserves 10 stars!!! Just got it today after I pre-ordered it and I really wasn't expecting too much...boy was I wrong. It's not just Atari cover art but some pretty detailed information from the artist on some of the covers. Images of unused covers along with pencil and color studies done by the artists on some of the covers. Fantastic...I mean fantastic scans of the art. I mean I could go on but if you love art it's a must...if you love Atari it's a must. The perfect coffee table book and one I won't be putting down for a while.Oh, Also there is also small bios on the artist and a quick history of the Atari consoles with some industrial design art of the models.This is how you do a Art of book! Major props to Tim Lapetino on putting this together.

I received my Atari 2600 for Christmas of 1978 and spent the next 4 years entrenched in everything Atari - from the games, to the manuals that were included, to the boxes themselves. Spending all of my spare change in the arcade during the days, I'd come home and play my Atari for hours before bedtime: Dodge 'Em, Night Driver, and Combat were my first. Then came the onslaught of arcade conversions; Space Invaders, Missile Command, Asteroids. Going to the mall or department store meant another chance for me to be able to look over those wonderful boxes and stare at the artwork hinting at the wonder that they contained. This book takes the reader back to those days and the overall magic and wonder of the early home videogame years. It's more than just pictures of box art - it's stories, personal accounts, history, and informative facts about the early world of Atari. This book is a must buy if, like me, you were in your "prime" years during the late 70's and early 80's. It is going to find a permanent place on my coffee table and will be a source for conversation for many years to come. Thanks to everyone who put this book together!

There is a section containing many games, the artwork used for the covers and also a screenshot of the gameplay. The screenshot is small and it would have been nicer to have the screenshot be double the size. There are photos of the consoles, and descriptions about them.The book measures 11.25" H x 10" W x 1.125" D. It's a hardcover book. The binding seems to be strong and sturdy and seems like it will last over the years. I've attached several photos with samples pages from the book. The book contains 351 pages.

Those of us old enough to have started gaming on the Atari 2600 remember that those graphics tended to be somewhat...underwhelming. Playing classic games like Adventure, Combat, Circus Atari and Superman it helped if your imagination could fill in the blanks, and nothing helped that process along like the packaging your game came in. The art on the boxes and instruction manuals laid the foundation for the worlds that the Atari's processor could never actually display on screen.I've been saying for years that I'd love a collection of that art in a book and I'm thrilled that someone finally did it. Anyone who spent the late 70s hooked on these games should love seeing the high quality reproductions of the art and learning some history about the talented folks who made them all happen. If you're one of us early Gen-Xers this book is for you.
