Whereas countless philosophers since Aristotle have attempted to define what is quintessentially human, Donald brings new knowledge of neuropsychology, ethology, and archaeology to propose a tripartite theory of the transition from ape to man. Using the fossil evidence of braincase size and tool-kit remains, Donald concludes that the australopithecines were limited to concrete/episodic minds: bipedal creatures able to benefit from pair-bonding, cooperative hunting, etc., but essentially of a seize-the-moment mentality. The first transition was to a ``mimetic'' culture: the era of Homo erectus in which mankind absorbed and refashioned events to create rituals, crafts, rhythms, dance, and other prelinguistic traditions. This was followed by the evolution to mythic cultures: the result of the acquisition of speech and the invention of symbols. The third transition carried oral speech to reading, writing, and an extended external memory- store seen today in computer technology. This summary, however, does not do justice to Donald's careful analysis of rival theories as well as his mining of the neuroanatomical and neurological literature, presenting, for example, evidence of the distribution of language skills across both hemispheres. He gets high marks, too, for pointing out how often cognitive theories become caught up in the trap of the homunculus--the little man in the brain who presides over all our conscious activities. Needless to say, his theory is open to challenge as well (the relation of mimesis to language; the constant reliance on computer metaphors; and, ultimately, the use of Western tradition as the paradigm of human evolution). I bought this book to fulfill an assignment for a class I'm taking in a doctor of liberal studies class, but I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the topic of how language was developed. It's like a good detective novel--a real page turner. Humans evolved without a language for many years. Try to imagine that if you can. Then we began to talk and tell stories, but we didn't have anything to read. Unthinkable. Alphabets, of course, are only one way of writing and reading and there are reasons why. Now we are post-lingual. We no longer have to remember everything because we have external symbolic systems to remember them for us. Fascinating stuff for anyone who might have thought we are just talking monkeys.

An important precursor to Donald's key book "A Mind So Rare". This one introduces the theory of human consciousness evolving from three stages of development involving the culture of proto-humans. A masterful idea that is the best theory we have of how our remarkable conceptual abilities have arisen so distinctly from the primates we arose from.

Well written, easy to follow and a fascinating topic. I really enjoyed this book. Might re-read it.

I work as an agricultural business consultant providing a variety of services to individual farms and various agricultural groups around the world. I find it very helpful to better understand why people think the way they do. Some times there is a cultural base for the decisions they make and sometimes there may be genetic predispositions. Donald did a very nice job of covering the state of knowledge on the evolutionary underpinnings of our cognitive processes and how they intertwine with cultures. Even though it is a bit dated it provides a great framework to build on.

The book was in excellent condition and I received the order just in time for the start of the semester. So, far this is my favorite nursing book and one of the most difficult classes that I have taken. The changes that a woman's body goes through during the birth process is astronomical. Aside from that, the text has a lot of errors in it and it could be organized better. Hopefully, the author will release a newer version of this book with less grammatical errors and a better index. With my order, I received a study guide, which was a great review of content and a big help for the end of term HESI. When I completed my clinicals the nurses on the unit had a copy of this book in the reference section of their Mother Baby Unit. Everything that you need to know about congenital abnormalities and the location of the fundus antepartum and post partum for the HESI is in this book.

Required for nursing school. After reading 6 chapters (15 to go), there are quite a few errors, a textbook should have a none to very few. The setup is also not appropriate such as the intro and pathophys is the same paragraph. Followed by management. then RN assessment and RN management which is the same as management. Disorganized for a longer book I suppose. Wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't required.

So. Many. Grammatical errors. I find it hard to take seriously and appreciate spending so much money on a textbook with so many errors. If you have to use this book for class, I'm sorry. Maybe you aren't the stickler of grammatical accuracy as am I. I'm thankful to have had an instructor that relied more on her PowerPoint slides than the text.

I'm a music teacher, and I'm appalled at the omissions and inaccuracies of this book. Glaringly obvious inaccuracies. Sections are omitted. Instead of showing the solo in "Sweet Child O'Mine" it literally says "ad lib with E minor pentatonic scale". If I wanted to ad lib, I wouldn't have bought a BOOK. Make no mistake, these are hastily put together transcriptions . I bought this book in the hope that I could find more accurate versions of popular songs, and you can literally find more accurate and complete tabs for FREE on tab & sheet music websites across the internet.

What wild audacity the authors had to have scores that just says "ad lib. lead guitar based on the E. minor pentatonic scale" which betrays the whole idea of exchanging money for actual music scores. It's like buying a pizza and getting a box that says "freely imagine that you're now gastronomically satiated" or buying a fiction with pages that says "ad lib. fill in ideas that there is a plot for a sci-fi story in these blank pages".

Horrible and basically useless. The cover says “Easy guitar tab edition”; however, it is not really a tab edition. Instead, it is a sheet music edition, with selected tab sections in some songs. Many of the songs contain absolutely zero tab notation! Worst of all, the songs are missing whole sections, some times it tells you to ad lib, and sometimes it tells you nothing. Also, make sure you notice: the cover reads in bold print “500 greatest songs of all time”; however the fine print above says “67 selections from”. Lastly, they make very poor use of space, making songs take way too many pages. I would send it back, but only paid $3, so not worth the shipping.

There's a lot to like in terms of the wide variety of songs presented and the fact that you get both regular music notation and guitar tabs. But the way that the publisher crammed so much into this traditionally bound paperback format makes for a very poor user experience. The book is rather thick and has to be held open on a music stand using large binder clips, which makes flipping pages cumbersome at best. A spiral bound format would have worked much better. The work around is to photocopy the pages of the song you're interested in.More aggravating is the absolutely tiny print. It takes more concentration to to decipher what's written on the page than to learn the song.

Covers great songs, but pretty challenging to follow. If you're used to looking up chords online, this might not be the best fit. It is written more as a traditional sheet music book. If you can follow sheet music well, this is ideal. If not, not ideal.

For my grandson. He is autistic and taught himself to play the guitar in 6 mo with YouTube. He is amazing. I'm hoping he will like it.

Pros:-Song selection is varied and adequately represent the classic rock era-Notation is thorough, including all chords, lyrics, some tabs, and standard sheet music for each song-All the music seems to be in the correct keys, tuning, rhythms, etc-has a short background for each song including band, chart ranking, year, etc. Interesting to readCons:-Although advertised as "Easy", the songs in this book are more suited for players of intermediate or higher skill level.-The print is a bit small for my taste, I would rather spend more time playing guitar than trying to decipher the notes.-TAB format is often not present for the whole song, usually just intro sections or solos.On the whole, I think that this songbook is a good way to learn some of the more famous classic rock tunes. Rather than some books which only include the more recognizable parts of songs such as intros or main riffs, the Rolling Stone songbook contained sheet music for the entirety of every song. That being said, I found that the font size was set a little bit too small to make for easy reading while playing. I find myself having to spend a decent amount of time before even picking up my guitar to read the music and pick out the smallest of the notes (hammer-ons, pick-ups, chord charts). This book is probably NOT the best fit for those just starting guitar (I would reccommend the "Hal-Leonard Easy Pop Melodies" for novices, one edition comes with a CD to provide backup and tempo). But for those with a fair amount of skill, this publication from Rolling Stone with over 60 songs will provide hours of fun and valueNote on shipping: my copy came with 3 of the corners slightly damaged/dented but this was probably due to the shipping and not the publisher

Excellent transcriptions and the book is well made. The pages aren’t thin and the binding is strong.

It has adventure, action, mystery, villains, passion, a strong curvy woman, and steamy hot romance with awesome characters. This book will not disappoint in any way and waiting anxiously for more books to come?

Kat is new the the Paranormal Unit and her first case is missing women who appear to have nothing in common. Hunter is a dragon shifter and loner. He has been doing undercover work and is brought in for this case. He realizes Kat is his mate but he ignores it. Kat goes undercover and then gets taken, Hunter will do whatever is necessary to get his mate back.Suspense, sex, and shifters. A little confusing at first but smooths out pretty quick. The sex is smoking but at the end of the story. I love this series but wished it was a little longer.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Nice cover and nice paper and good font. That deserves two stars. However, almost all of the reviews are misleading if you think they are talking about this book. Amazon is applying reviews in batch to the story, not to any particular edition. Beware. This edition, with this cover and with "The Discovery of the Great" at the top, is bogus. The closest you come to identifying the publisher is in the back: "Made in the USA San Bernardino, CA 26 February 2018". It will be printed just for you, most likely from text that was originally on standard 8 1/2" by 11". When sent to the printer and printed on 6" x 9" paper stock, most all the lines wrap so you get some short lines and some long - a complete mess! This printer did not even bother to define the right paper size. Also did not bother to print page numbers or anything beyond the Mark Twain text.

Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.

There are three significant translations of this book, and amazon's lacklustre book-sorting system creates nothing but chaos when searching for the correct format / translation of this book. We bought this book for my child’s 7th grade summer reading. For this, annotation is required including underlining. The printing on this book is so so small that I literally gasped when I opened the book. This book should be 3-4 times as thick but they’ve condensed the font size so much to save pages that it is useless to a student. I have 20/20 vision and would struggle. I want my money back but am not going to bother sending it back because it would cost me as much postage as I paid for the “book.” The text size is what I’m guessing to be 5 pt font. It’s shocking!!!! We are headed to Barnes and Noble to get something we can actually use for school.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.
