"The Hospital" is the first thing I've read from Keith C. Blackmore but won't be the last. This is an interesting short story about a survivor in a post-apocalyptic city. He has come down from his fortress looking for supplies. While checking the hospital when he has a run-in with a deranged survivor hiding in the hospital and finds himself in a frightening predicament.The main character was likeable and interesting and the story made me want to learn more about him. The pacing is fast and what he finds is graphic and horrific. I found the story interesting enough to get the first book of the series this ties into ("Mountain Man"). I hope to enjoy the book as well as the short story.
This short story was originally published in Blackmore's book of short stories Cauldron Gristle. I am rereading the story and will be rereading Mountain Man and Safari (Mountain Man Book 2) so I can go on to books three and four in the Mountain Man series - Hellifax (Mountain Man Book 3) and Well Fed (Mountain Man Book 4).I liked the books the first time I read them and this short story answers a couple of questions that pop up in MOUNTAIN MAN so I would suggest reading this story before you start the rest of the series.If you have a weak stomach, you probably should find another genre of books to read. This little gem is full of blood and guts and profanity.
It's graphic but the writing is poor. I'm shocked this got published and even more surprised it was released for Kindle. Very short so it doesn't take long to get through but you'll regret it when you're done lol. The premise was very interesting so if a better writer ran with it, it could be good. Matt Shaw from the white and black cover books (Sick B*stards, Rotting Dead F*cks, SickER B*stards etc) could do something great. His black cover stories are so good (and gross).

With zombies it seems all stories are all the same zombies are all trying to eat the humans and there is not much else involved with the story. Well I have found an author that left the part out that irritates me and wrote a story worthy of Stephen King if the master of horror wrote about zombies.The Hospital was offered as free on Audible. I have quickly gotten into audio books. As it allows me to work and listen to books. When starting this book I did not know it was about zombies. I quickly figured out it was but I was so engrossed in the story that did not matter. The story is not just about zombies it has action with a thriller and horror that will bring readers (or listeners) to the edge of their seat.I do not know who the narrator was but I really enjoyed the roughness I felt in his voice. The thrill that he projected in my mind throughout the whole story I did not just hear or read the book I lived it.I highly recommend this book to any who enjoy a good horror.The bunnies and I give this book 4 carrots.
Keith Blackmore has certainly captured the end of the world apocalyptic feeling in The Hospital. I was shocked and Eager at the same time to learn of Alice and what she does, what happens to her. To create a character with such a twisted mind and write it so enticingly, makes me yearn to know a little more about her, how she ended up in her frame of mind. Although it is a hospital.... of Insane? Perhaps there should be another book in the sequel....In a day where I am hearing and seeing, reading more and more of the age of zombies, and a rebirth in death so to speak, this book captured my attention and wasn't released until i finished every single page. For my friends that are into this story line I will definitely recommend The Hospital.

I was in the fence about the series, and this was exactly the right amount of gore, guts, and cringeworthy fiction needed to convince me I had to read more. You know how much I love audiobooks, right? They're an auditory delight, allowing me to multi-task as I enjoy, whatever it is that I wanna enjoy! This story allowed just that. This book was a fun story to listen to and visualize. It's a small piece of a book whole, I believe. I haven't purchased the other books yet, but you know, I think I will. The Hospital: The First Mountain Man Story by Keith C. Blackmore is about lonely Gus, an apocalyptic survivor. He's lost tons of weight, has established survival rules gleaned from horror movies, which he follows to a "T" even under terrifying conditions. It's a short story but enough of a sample that I need to read the book in its entirety. I forced myself to listen to the whole thing just to see if it changed. Sigh...that was a waste of time. Overdone descriptions. I am also put off by the current obsession with zombies and find the unrealistic and short-sighted perspective of post apocalyptic literature uniformly lacking in true depth and breadth. If you are that depressed, get some help, and I don't mean meds.
